three months ago, half of the world disappeared. and when i say the world, i mean the physical planet. it's like it was cut in half with a giant sword and left the layers of earth's rocky core exposed. life is normal for those that live away from the void but those close to it experience different things every day.
since earth is layered upon itself, phosphorous gases and things of that nature float up into the atmosphere. the further you are from the rift, the better your air. the closer... well, you get the picture. if you live near the cut-off, you're considered void.
like a normal dystopian world, the rich live off of the poor's suffering and hard work. i wouldn't say our family is rich or poor. we live smack dab in the middle. we have decent air some days but other days, we have to wear masks. my parents still work in their firm but instead of selling insurances, they sell safeties.
they invented them; they're essentially this agreement between rich families and void families, that in exchange for work, they'll take in one of their children and treat them as their own. no system is perfect so of course, it's like the US Foster Care System. there are a few good ones, but most people are doing it for the money and the work that the void family is renting to them.
some middle-class families get a void child to live with them, just so they can help out. we little guys have to stick together. the families appreciate the fact that they're helping the future generation grow up in better conditions.
nothing is ever going to go back to the way it was but we can try to make this our new normal.

"y/n, we're home! and we have a surprise!"
i barrel down the hall from my room, pushing my glasses up my broad nose. i haven't had to get a prescription adjustment thank god, but they desperately need to be adjusted. we just don't have the money for it though.
i come into the living room and there's a 6'2" teen towering awkwardly in the doorway behind my parents. no correction, a 6'2" model standing towering behind my parents. even though his dirty blonde curls are pulled back in a black bandana and he's wearing a light grey t-shirt, baggy jeans, and classic black and white converse, he's probably the most attractive person I've seen in my entire life.
i know in my black crop top barely covering my belly, unruly curls unchecked, grey sweatpants falling off of my full hips and bare feet out, i look terrible compared to him. even though i'm what some would call, "caramel" or "light-skinned", i know for a fact when i blush, it's very noticeable.
and he's noticing.
"sweetheart, this is vincent. he's gonna help you at the auto shop while we're at the firm." dad says, smiling apologetically.
i open my mouth to protest and mom cuts in, "we know that you're doing what you can by yourself but you could definitely use another set of hands. not only are you doing the filing and billing by yourself, but you're also repairing and ordering parts. you need another pair of hands and we know that vincent can help."
i smile and walk over to vincent.
"hi, i'm y/n. but i go by y/n/n"
"vinnie. my parents call me vincent when i get in trouble."
i let out a light chuckle and he smiles.
"we're going to head back to the firm. you can help vinnie set up in the guest room and let him know where everything is."
