There was also a very important person missing. Nightmare wasn't here. No one has brought it up, not even Dream (who was currently a chatterbox as he always is). It felt... odd.
Everything was feeling surreal, like I wasn't truly here just yet. My feet hadn't hit reality. Sounds felt foggy... everyone felt so far away even though they were right here. I had been clutching Ink's hand this whole time we ate, but even that was feeling... far. Maybe it was the lack of sleep I'd been getting, it was hard to fall asleep some nights.
Ink was talking to me right now, I could feel the familiar rumble of his voice but couldn't fully hear him. I blinked multiple times until the world seemed to come back into some clarity.
"What'd you say?" I managed to turn and look at him. To my surprise, 'his' eyes were both red. Blade?
"You're really zoning out... did Cross do something to you?" She muttered to me, trying to ensure no one else heard.
"Not that I'm aware of, why?" I was finally at attention.
"Just a precaution. Sometimes being possessed by his knife can leave people dazed. Wanted to make sure you... hadn't." It seemed to dawn on her that she was being uncharacteristically doting towards me. A minor blush appeared on Ink's cheekbones.
"I'm fine. Just taking things back in."
She nodded in understanding and started to eat the food that Ink hadn't yet. Ink's eye lights were still flickering between shapes, just never changing from that red color. It was an interesting detail about their weird shared body thing.
I wasn't used to this new Blade. Where had she even come from? Was this another trick of hers? Even though she assisted in saving me... could she be trusted? Maybe she didn't want to kill me anymore but she's still a bad person. We can't just forget her past.
Everyone had finished eating and were now returning their plates to the kitchen. I was about to do the same thing, but Ink grabbed my plate for me. I thought it had been Blade but when I looked back, Ink's eyes had returned to normal. He gave a small smile, "I'll be back upstairs, you should go rest. I'll tell the others not to bother us for now."
I returned the smile and nodded. I definitely needed a break. At least I wasn't so out of it now. I returned to the bedroom and flopped on the bed so I stared up at the ceiling. There were so many thoughts bubbling in my head. What the hell was Blade up to? What was Cross' deal? Why did he want me to send a message to Night? Where was Night?? How do I even begin to prepare for this child? I wasn't taught anything about being a parent...
My mind flickered back to my own parents. They needed to know more than anybody else (except Ink) about this baby. They were going to be grandparents! I knew that's always been their dream. I'm sure they weren't expecting... whatever this child is going to look like.
Ink came back into the room like he said he would, shutting the door behind him with a sigh. He laid in the bed next to me without a word, staring up at the empty ceiling.
"Something wrong?" I asked as I turned my head to face him.
"Blade is acting weird. She's never stopped talking before but now she's being dead quiet." Ink glanced back to me, mild concern and annoyance on his face. "She's hiding in our SOUL right now so you don't have to worry about her overhearing right now."
I didn't say anything as I scooted over to cuddle into Ink. My face was buried in the crook of his neck, my legs were straddling his, and I was hugging his torso close. He held one hand to my back and used the other to rub his temple. How did skeletons even get headaches?
Blade didn't seem like a major concern right now. We could worry about her later. Right now, I needed to talk about Ink about other pressing things. I hardly knew where to even start.
I finally started with, "Ink, we really need to go see my parents."
"Don't worry, I briefed them on the situation not too long after you were taken." His face was currently snuggled into my hair so his voice was slightly muffled.
"You did that? I... really appreciate that. But we should probably also tell them that I'm back. And that they're going to be grandparents. That seems pretty important." I was very slightly annoyed that he didn't seem to take that into consideration also.
"Oh, uh- right. I kind of forgot we need to do that too." He was sounding extremely tired.
"Ink, did you get any sleep while I was gone?"
"Maybe a few hours... give or take."
I un-snuggled myself for a moment to grab his jaw with both of my hands to look at him. Now that he had finally let himself relax, the bags under his eye sockets were incredibly noticeable. I ran a thumb under one of them and Ink... purred? Was that how you would describe that sound that just came out of his body?
"You sir, are far too in love with me if you can't get any sleep while I'm away and purr at my slightest touch." I said teasingly, a loving smile across my face.
"Guilty as charged." He blinked up at me, an equal smile on his features. I gave him a gentle kiss on his temple, where the headache had been residing before, before letting him go and resuming cuddle time.
"What am I going to do with you?" I tsked playfully as I pulled him even deeper.
"If you think I'm bad, just imagine how this kid is going to be. I'll be such a bad influence on them." Ink ran his hand gently over my stomach.
"You better get your beauty sleep now, we sure won't be able to once this bundle of joy is here." I put my own hand over his.
"I can't wait for it..." Ink was sounding like he was struggling to stay awake, his voice barely above a mutter.
"Me neither."
