Daya was still on the hospital bed, Adarsh asleep in his arms. A little further on, Sachin was asleep on an uncomfortable chair. The two men hadn't wanted to leave, even when Abhijeet had suggested to them. Daya couldn't stand the thought of being away from Shreya again, even though he hadn't seen her yet. He was waiting for the doctor to come and see him, to finally tell him the good news he was waiting for. Patience had always been one of his virtues, but today it was not.
Morning was pointing the tip of her nose, the rays of the rising sun illuminating the room with golden light. Daya looked down at little Adarsh who was starting to shake in his arms. Another nightmare. The child had kept having nightmares all night long and Daya had tried each time to calm him down. He was asking for his mother, he was asking for Shreya. Nothing seemed to work, except when he promised to take him to see Shreya.
This morning, Daya was hoping to finally hear from him. Shreya had to be out of the operating room by now, she had to be in a room. So he could see her, touch her. He was impatient. The last time he saw her was in prison, right after her first assault, and at the time he didn't know she was pregnant. Now her belly needed to be seen and he wanted to be able to admire it. He was so angry with himself for not having been there during her pregnancy, for not being able to support her like a husband would. But he was here now, and he would never leave her.
Daya, with the most infinite gentleness, put Adarsh on the bed and then left the room. He didn't want to be away for long, but he needed news. And he would take the opportunity to bring back breakfast, and why not some new clothes for Adarsh. The child was wearing the clothes Bohra had given him and Daya didn't want anything left of this monster.
He walked to the reception where a nurse in her sixties smiled at him. Her eyes returned a great softness, just like each of her gestures. She nodded when she saw him, as if she already knew what he was going to ask her, and typed something on her computer. A big smile lit her face as she looked up at him.
- "I have good news for you, Mr. Shetty," she said to him. "Your friend spent the night with no problems. She woke up once, asking for Adarsh. Then she fell asleep again."
- "I… can I see her?" Daya hesitated, for whom the dearest wish was finally coming true.
- "That shouldn't be a problem. Maybe you would like to wake the little boy up so he can see his mom."
- "Adarsh, yes I'll take care of that right now," in his joy, he had forgotten about Adarsh.
Daya returned to the bedroom, a huge smile on his face. Shreya had spent the night, she and the baby were fine. He couldn't be happier. Of course she would certainly have to stay in the hospital for a while, but whatever. He wouldn't leave her, he would stay with her until he was kicked out. But no one would.
Upon entering the bedroom, Sachin was still asleep. Daya hesitated to wake him up. The young man hadn't slept much the night before, just like him. And the past months had been difficult for him as well. He had put his life on hold to help him find Shreya, just like him worried about her. How could it have been otherwise? She was his sister and they had grown so close the past few years.
A glance at the bed informed him that Adarsh was no longer sleeping, as if he had felt he was alone. The child was looking at him with closed eyes, not yet quite awake. He rubbed his eyes with his small fist, yawned with a big mouth. He then crawled to the foot of the bed and Daya walked over to him. Adarsh held out his arms to him and Daya was happy to hug him.
- "Where is mom?" He asked in a small voice. "Is she still sleeping?"
- "Yes, she's still sleeping," Daya replied. "But we can wait until she wakes up, in her room."
