Chapter 13: I Hope You Find Happiness, Even if it's Not By My Side
Death was a foreign friend.
You always knew you would die, and every now and then, like any other healthy human mind, you often wondered about the when and the how. But it was always a distant thought. You were too busy with your life to actually sit down and contemplate death and its consequences.
Young people feel that they will live forever, even when they know better, the important thing was that they felt like they were immortal.
Hell, you were eating potato fries when you got run over by a truck.
Uwak told you that you died saving some idiot kid on the road. You knew that, but you didn't understand, didn't remember the how and the when and the feeling of dying. You were dead, like truly dead in your world, but you were still you and you still felt untouchable.
When there was danger, you've always shrugged it off. Even when you were facing that demon prince from the last world, you never really saw yourself in true danger.
Death was a distant concept until that knife met your side and you felt every lick of pain.
When that blade dug into your skin and pierced your organs, you finally understood, you weren't immortal, you weren't unkillable. You were flesh and you were going to die.
"Uwak," you called from the depths of your unconscious.
It took a while before you heard that familiar ding, followed by [Yes, Host?]
"Do you know how much time has passed?"
[Answering the Host, it has been over six hours since you've been wheeled into surgery. The damage to your kidney was too much so they're removing it as we speak.]
"What about Maya and Leviathan?"
[When the Host passed out, this System stayed outside to monitor the situation. Maya panicked but Levi called the police and calmed her down. An ambulance came to pick you up and they only let Maya aboard. I had to monitor both your mental and physical conditions so I don't know what happened to Leviathan, all I know is that I cannot find him within 100 meters.]
"Thank you. Can I wake up now?"
[I'm afraid not. You're still undergoing surgery. Your body will awaken on its own later.]
"Fine. Send me to sleep."
The system frowned. Did its Host not want to spend more time talking to it?
"Hurry up."
[Yes, Host.]
Uwak pulled away from your psyche and disabled your self-awareness.
When you stirred back into consciousness, it was to the sound of a steady heart monitor. The smell of disinfectant made your nose scrunch.
[Welcome back, Host.]
You looked around. A boxy TV hung sat on a mahogany table across your bed, the lights were a harsh white, the walls were a calming cream and wood, and the windows were covered with a green blackout curtain.
[This is suite 143 of Yuuei Teaching Hospital.]
Yuuei was one of the places this body's mother frequented and sponsored. She read her books to the children and brought flowers to the elderly. It was a mystery how that scumbag father ended up with such a pure-hearted woman.
You attempted to sit up, but the stinging on your side stopped you.
[Host, please don't be reckless.]
