The City: Part 2

One looked around the room, a look of horror on his face below the paper bag. For once, he was totally and truly afraid, not even bothering to hide it.

My fault, my fault, my fault, he kept telling himself in his head. First I take him away from a place where he was already safe, then I lose him in the lab, and now I've lost him yet again! Am I really that weak?! I can't even protect one person!

He didn't like thinking that way. He didn't like being negative. It never helped. But it was hard not to be at times like this.

Just like how it was hard to see the light when his flashlight had powered down.

All he knew was that he wasn't about to just give up. He promised he would protect me, so that's what he was going to do.

He just... had to figure out how.

"SIX!" One cried, running around the empty building, holding his hands up in an attempt to amplify his voice. "SIX?! WHERE ARE YOU?!"

He searched that entire building, tearing it apart in search of me. He didn't care if he was being loud. He didn't care that the moonlight was shining brightly onto him through the windows. He just wanted me back.

He searched that building until he got back to that room with the unshattered mirror.

It didn't call him anymore. It didn't urge him to touch it.

It was like the magic of the mirrors faded once that man was freed, whatever he was.

Was that all his power was? Was that all he was destined to do? Release a monster and allow it to take me, his only friend, away?! He still couldn't do anything. He couldn't make weird black blobby things or float or do anything!

No. He couldn't accept that. He WOULDN'T accept that. He refused. He was a one! There had to be more than that!

He slowly cocked his head, unsure of what touching the mirror would do now.

Would he dare find out? What if it released something else.

Or worse, what if it just did nothing?! What if he really was powerless.

....He had to try. It's better to have tried and failed than to have never tried in the first place. So... he walked up to it and pressed his hands to it.

Or, tried to. But instead of feeling glass, he just fell right through, landing in another room, in front of another mirror.

This wasn't like when he landed in the hallway. He was still in the real world. Just... someplace else.

"H-Huh?" He asked, looking around himself. He looked out a nearby window at the moon, still shining down on him.

He was still in the city. But now he was higher up. He was closer to the center of it.

"...Teleportation," He whispered, turning and touching the mirror he just came out of, ending up somewhere completely different yet again, in front of yet another mirror. "Interesting..."

Was that his power? Using unshattered mirrors to teleport? It was almost like the mirrors were a way for him to contain his power, waiting until that monster was released before allowing him to use them. Perhaps that was why the mirrors always shattered when he touched them before now.

But... what was that monster? And why had it taken me away from him? Why were his powers just limited to the mirrors? Was that all there was for him? How was he supposed to bring the sun back when all he could do was teleport through the mirrors?

He looked at his hands, then the mirror.

He could see his reflection now.

Boy, did he look like a mess. It almost made him sad. No, it did make him sad. He wasn't sad because of his cut-up feet or his dirty attire, but because he was alone. Because my reflection wasn't behind his.
