I stare long and hard at the mirror in front of me. I cracked a smile.
I look gorgeous, I thought and nodded at myself. I hung my book bag on my shoulder and set out.
"Morning, Mami!" I called as I rushed past her art studio. My ma's the town's best artist. Sadly, I didn't really inherited any of her skills.
"Morning, dear!"
My older brother was reading a book at the table when I dashed past him and grabbed an arepa.
"First day, right?" He asked, not looking up.
"Urp!" I meant to say yup, but a mouth stuffed with food doesn't really pronounce what you what. Thankfully, my brother understood me.
"Good luck!" He said. After a while, he added, "Don't burn the place down."
I rolled my eyes as I closed the front door. My father was outside with a cup of coffee, chatting away with one of his friends. He turn when he heard the door close.
"Ah, mija! Feel excited for your first day of work?"
"A bit."
"Your daughter's starting her first day of wok today? Impressive!" Said the friend.
"That's my daughter alright!" Said my father, bursting with pride. It warmed my heart to have such support.
"Thanks, pa." I smile and continued on my way.
"It's just the first day, don't be stressed, alright?" My father shouted after me.
"Alright!" I hollered back.
Now, you might be wondering, what is my job? Well, the don't burn the place down comment may have given you a hint. Think about it.
I'm working at Julieta Madrigal's stall!
I'll only be handing out the food and making errands for her, but she promised if she had time, she would teach me how to cook like her! Imagine! Being taught by the best baker in town!
I had taken over cooking for the family since I was eleven. I was hired when I helped
I pulled out a map Julieta had given me. She switched the location of her stall every day, so she had given me a map for the location. Today was Thursday, so her stall was closer to my home. Sweet.
I walked for a few minutes before seeing a familiarly long line. I walked to the front- and sure enough- Julieta was handing out her healing treats. But someone was also in the stall with her.
With a silent gasp, I realized that it was Luisa Madrigal! Meeting two of the Madrigals at the same time and place!
I calmed my self down a little. I saw them almost everyday! This is no big deal- But I'll get to talk to them and have a conversation instead of just staring.
As I entered, Julieta greeted me with a smile. "Y/n, you're here! You can help Camilo stock the shelves."
Before the rebuilding of casita, Julieta's stall was just a small table. Now, Luisa has been given a break, so the town people had to do more manual labor, which cause more injuries. None of them are very major, mostly just cut and scrapes.
"Camilo?" I looked around and realized that Luisa was gone. "Where's Luisa?"
"What do you mean-?"
"Tia, I've got the flour!" Interrupted someone from the back. I turned to see Mirabel. Wait, but why was she calling her own mom tia?
"Thank you, Camilo."
Ah, everything made sense now.
"Camilo, this is Y/n. I hired her as my helper. The two of you will work together from now on."
"Got it," said Camilo, transforming into a pretty tall person. He place a basket of goods on the top shelf.
"I'm sorry for not informing you earlier, Y/n, it slipped my mind. I'm still not used to having Camilo around," apologized Julieta.
"There's no problem!" I quickly assured her. It's an honor to work with you two anyway. "So what should I do?"
"I need to stock the shelves. You can Camilo should head to casita and bring my the food in the oven."
"Yes, ma'am!" I said, jokingly saluting her. Unexpectedly, Camilo had done the same thing.
I raised a playful eyebrow at him and he laughed.
"So, you're Y/n?" Asked Camilo as we head down the road.
"Yup, and you're Camilo Chameleon?"
Camilo decided to go along with the joke. "The one and only!" He transformed into me and winked.
My jaw dropped a little. I knew what he could do, but I've never been copied before. He looked exactly like me.
Camilo smirked in satisfaction. My heart thumped.
"So wanna be friends?" I asked.
Camilo gave me a confused look. "Weren't we already friends the moment we started talking?"
"Well...I need confirmation to actually feel like we're friends," I explained, pursing my lips. "I'm me that way."
I looked at Camilo with a smile, but the shapeshifter didn't have the same expression.
"C-Camilo?" I asked awkwardly. "Are you okay?"
"Oh, I'm fine!" He said, waving it off.
The rest of the trip consisted jokes and puns from Camilo, which I happily laughed at. I liked his personality, a lot.
By the time we got back to Julietta's stall, he had already became one of my favorite people.
