He fumbled a bit while grabbing the walkie talkie and pressing the button. "Boss, it's me," he said gruffly into the device.
"Who?" Olaf said from the other end.
"Me," Hooky said, hurt leaking into his tone. "Your henchmen with-"
"With the hand problem?"
"Yes."
"What do you want?"
"Your blushing bride and the inventor just climbed up here to rescue the biting brat," Hooky's voice was normal again.
"Well how'd they do that?"
"Oh, I don't know," Hooky admitted.
"Well take a guess," Olaf replied sarcastically.
"Um... some sort of..."
"It was a grappling hook," I sighed, arms crossed next to Violet.
"Edith says it was a grappling hook."
"Where'd she get a grappling hook?"
"I don't know."
"She's mine."
Olaf's quick statement made my eyebrows raise and cheeks flush.
The two talked some more, all I caught was something about walkie talkie slang. When Hooky put it down, he turned to me.
"Count Olaf is very displeased with his bride," He told me threateningly.
"She's not his bride," Violet scoffs.
"Very soon she will be. Which means that I will soon be your henchperson-in-law."
Before me or Violet could reply, the trapdoor to the tower opened to reveal Klaus and Olaf.
"You know, some people say that the hardest job in the world is raising a child but it is nothing compared to conceiving, writing, directing, producing and performing in a theatrical presentation for the purposes of stealing their dead parents' fortune. It's a very difficult job, and I will not have any orphans mucking it up," He hissed walking up to me.
"You'll never touch our fortune!" Klaus shouted in disgust.
Olaf smirked and pulled me up from next to Violet and against his front. His arm wrapped around my waist, he said, "Klaus, I'll touch whatever I want."
He brought me along with him after ordering Hooky to keep my siblings in the tower until the wedding.
Back in my siblings' small bedroom, he shoved me against the door. "Why the hell did you attempt to rescue your sister?" He spat.
I grimaced from the pain in my back from colliding with the wood. "She's my little sister, did you honestly expect that I wouldn't?" I said back. "I made a promise to my parents that I would protect my siblings."
Olaf scoffed. "A fine job you've done. You weren't able to protect Klaus from being struck, you weren't able to protect Sunny from being tied up and put in a bird cage. You certainly haven't protected your siblings from me."
His harsh words felt like a thousand cuts slicing into me with each syllable.
"At least I'm protecting them from being stuck with you the rest of their lives," I cried. "I may be the one stuck here but what matters is that they will live and be put somewhere else."
"Even if it means you must give up yourself and your fortune?"
"Yes," I said firmly. "Even if I spend my days withering away, as long as they're safe and away from you it'll be worth it."
Olaf backed away from me and I moved away from the door, my arms wrapping around my torso.
"We'll see if you'll still be saying that in less than a year, Edith. Because despite being your husband I will spend every day of the rest of your life making you pay for what your beloved parents did!"
He walked out briskly, slamming the door and leaving me in my room shaking as tears began flooding my vision.
As I heard it lock, my left hand raised to cover my mouth, muffling my cries so no one could hear.
I realized that I had broken the promise to my parents and there was nothing I could do, not while the wicked man who I found both revolting and intriguing was after my family's fortune.
Like a moth drawn to a flame, Count Olaf had burned me harshly and unmercifully.
