9:34 PM, The Park
You rushed downstairs just in time to see the front door close behind Benson. You sighed, you were only gone for a few minutes and now everyone was leaving. As you were approaching the bottom floor, you stumbled across Thomas, who was stuck between the stair rails.
"Woah, what are you doing there, dude? And where did they go?" you asked. Thomas requested some help out of his position and you obliged, gently pulling his head away from the stairs.
"I don't know," he rubbed his sore neck. "they said something about saving Christmas, I think..." Of all the adventures you had to miss out on, of course it had to be this one.
"What do you wanna do now? Since everyone else is gone and this party is a total bust, do you wanna go look at Christmas lights?" Thomas seemed a bit hesitant to accept, maybe he had some secret Russian things he needed to take care of, you joked to yourself. You were about to tell him it was completely fine if he didn't want to accompany you but he cut you off.
"Of course! That sounds like fun." He shocked you with his genuine smile, but you grinned and grabbed your jacket anyway. You thought for sure that he had something else he would need to be doing, like helping his mom. Every time you were hanging out with him she always called. It's like she could see what you two were doing at all times. You hoped nothing would interrupt tonight, you've been looking forward to spending time with him for a while.
As you stepped into the snow, you shivered. It's been years since you've been outside in the snow like this; you were usually too busy with college or work to appreciate the weather. You turned to Thomas, who was wearing gloves and a thick jacket, he looked like he was accustomed to the cold and snow. Grabbing his gloved hand, you walked with him to the city square. Most people were spending time with their families, unwrapping presents and decorating, so the streets were relatively clear of anyone else. The multi-colored lights lit up the streets, illuminating the night sky. Thomas squeezed your hand and you turned to look at him. His eyes were shining with happiness, like he's never seen anything this beautiful in his life.
The light snow started to gain weight, splashing your clothes. Your hair begins dripping with the rain and your shoes are covered in slush that was once snow. Why did this always happen when you were having a good time? Before you could apologize for the change in forecast, Thomas led you into a nearby coffee shop with your already intertwined hands. The only person in there besides you two was a poor guy working the night shift on Christmas day. You both grabbed a warm drink and sat down.
"This isn't exactly going how I expected but I hope you're still enjoying yourself." He nodded enthusiastically.
"Are you kidding me? This is the most fun I've had in a while!" he laughed and you smiled sheepishly. Despite the bored employee being within hearing distance, Thomas dropped his facade, bringing out his natural accent liked he always did when he was with you. "I feel like... I can really be myself around you, [NAME]. I don't have to pretend to be one of the Americans." You couldn't express how happy that made you. Wrapping your arm around his shoulders, you gave him a hug and a big smile worked its way onto your face. No matter what you guys talked about for the rest of the night, that smile just wouldn't leave. You felt so happy and giddy in that moment, you never wanted those feelings to fade. You were sure Thomas felt the same way; he was smiling joyfully and his face was tinted red.
Your conversation was interrupted by the employee coughing to get your attention. "Hey, it's closing time. There's umbrellas near the doorway if you guys need them." Glancing at the clock, you realized it was already midnight. As much as you hated to let this night end, you guys should probably get back. Thanking the man for the coffee, you exited the shop while Thomas grabbed an umbrella. The rain wasn't as heavy it was a few hours earlier but Thomas held the umbrella out, covering both of you. The Christmas lights were still lovely to look at, arguably better in the rain than it was in the snow. On the way back to the house, you were joking about how surprised you were that there wasn't any hitmen trying to kill you again.
"At least we didn't have to run away from dudes armed with guns this time!" you teased Thomas while he chuckled in embarrassment. He still felt bad about almost getting you hurt. You were near the doorsteps of the house when Thomas stopped in his tracks, deep in thought. You turned around and looked at him, cocking your head to the side as if to ask if he was alright.
"[NAME], I don't really know how to say this. The K.G.B never taught me about how I feel right now. It's like every time you're with me, I get this weird feeling in my stomach. But it's a good feeling! I feel happy. What I'm trying to tell you is-"
You stepped closer to him and leaned towards his face, capturing his lips in yours. He was so focused on talking he didn't notice you getting close until you kissed him. As he started reciprocating the kiss, you felt rain sprinkle on your head. Thomas dropped the umbrella to wrap his arms around your waist, pulling you closer to him. You draped your arms over his shoulders and threaded your fingers in his hair, tugging slightly as he kissed you deeply. You parted to take a breath and leaned your head against his chest. The rain cooled your warm face down.
"You have no idea how long I've been wanting to do that. Now, come inside before you get sick." You led him inside, warming up a hot drink and getting him some dry clothes. It was much too late and cold outside for him to walk back to his dorm, so you let him stay for the night.
By the time everyone else got back from their Christmas adventures, you and Thomas were already fast asleep in bed.
