"Y/N, I think I've got our mysterious message translated," Echo announced, startling you a bit from your deep concentration. You smiled and quickly shut the book, hiding the evidence of the phrase you had just learned and awaiting Echo's report.
You were now resting back in your seat, trying to get some relaxation in before the rescue mission. Apparently the signal had been a cry for help, so now the ship was steered in the direction of the planet the signal had spoke of. Your gaze drifted over to Tech, who you could partially see from where he sat in the pilot's chair. Seeing as you were sitting a few seats behind, he did not catch your gaze nor look your way. The two of you had actually enjoyed having some nice, peaceful silence like this, despite Tech being known for being chatty at times.
You were about to close your eyes and take a brief nap until you heard Tech drumming his fingers against the control panel. You knew how he tended to fidget at times, so you closed your eyes to think nothing of it.
But that was when you heard a familiar series of sounds.
'I love you.'
You shot up into a fully upright position, eyes open and wide as you stared towards Tech. His head was slightly turned and he was side eyeing you past his goggles. His fingers still tapped against the ship's controls.
'I love you.'
'I love you.'
'I love you.'
Your heart pounded within your chest, face growing hot as you suddenly became frantic. How were you supposed to respond to this now? He had been casually tapping this message only when you were nearby for days now. You had just originally thought he had a song stuck in his head and was tapping his hands along to it. But knowing what you did now made you wonder if there were any other hidden messages he had sent your way that you hadn't known.
Swallowing nervously, you rested your hand on the chair closest to you. Tech was still casually glancing your way, trying to keep it subtle but now failing as you knew what he was doing at last. Hand resting on the chair's fabric, you took a deep breath before tapping your fingers like he did.
'I love you... too.'
Tech froze all of the sudden, facing forward entirely now. You watched him go completely still. Concern washed over you, so you gently called, "Tech...?"
"You... know Morse code," Tech responded, his voice so faint you nearly missed it. "How... long have you known?"
You got up from your seat, moving closer to the passenger seat next to the pilot's, trying to catch a glimpse of his expression. "Not long," you confessed. "I was learning some earlier." You sat down in the chair next to him, noticing how he kept his eyes forward. However, there was a rosiness to his cheeks that wasn't there before.
"I see..." he answered slowly, nodding slightly. Awkward silence settled over the both of you.
"Did you really mean it...?" you asked him softly, peering over at him. "I mean, have... Have you really meant it?"
Silence. Then, Tech sighed. "Well... yes," he replied, rubbing at little at the back of his neck. He spared you a sliver of a glance before uneasily averting his eyes forward yet again.
You felt a bubbly excitement rise up within you, but it was dampened slightly with guilt. "How, uh... long have you been tapping this message for me?" you asked, letting the biggest question you had off your chest in the process.
Tech squirmed a bit. "It has been two weeks now," he murmured. "Though I... must admit I did not expect you to learn Morse code this soon."
Your eyes widened. Then a giggle erupted from you, snapping Tech's bewildered gaze to you. "That's so cute and dorky!" you exclaimed.
"You... do not find it a bizzare way to confess?" Tech asked hopefully, his eyes lighting up.
You snorted. "It's bizzare, yeah, but really, really... sweet." A smile made its way over your face. "I was actually scared to confess that I liked you too... in case you didn't return my feelings."
Tech smiled back at you. "Of course I reciprocate your feelings. You are an incredible human being." A blush came to your cheeks, deeply flattered by his compliment.
"Aww, Tech..."
"How close are we to our destination?" came Echo's voice from behind you. The two of you jolted, equally startled, though you turned towards him.
"It will not be long now," Tech answered quickly, sounding frazzled which made you feel better about your own reddened face.
Echo took one look of your face, raising an eyebrow as you tried to hide it in your hands, to little success. A knowing smile pulled at the corner of Echo's lips. He made a sound of affirmation to Tech's reply before he turned on his heel, walking out and leaving the two of you alone again.
Silence fell over the both of you before you finally broke the silence in asking, "He definitely knows we're together now, doesn't he...?"
"Absolutely," Tech replied, both of you going redder and becoming even more flustered at the thought. However, you found you didn't really mind. The happiness that swirled about within you knowing Tech loved you as much as you loved him... It made the situation all well worth it for a little embarrassment.
