We were beginning to wrap up for the day, watching as parents started coming to pick up their kids. I watched as Suzy talked very animatedly with what appeared to be her mom. Next thing I knew she was running up to me, a paper in hand. "I want you to have this River, I know they're your favorite too." She smiles and hands me the drawing she made earlier. I accept the paper and thank her. She just smiles again and runs off to her mom. Before she leaves she waves at me and then exits the daycare with her mom. "Whatcha got there, hm?" I jump, Sundrop had snuck up behind me yet again. I groan, "Sundrop you really have to stop doing that-" Sundrop laughs. I try to walk away from him and start to clean up the arts and crafts area. He follows, helping pick up a bit too. Within about a half hour we've managed to clean up the daycare, with some time to spare. I look up from where I was organizing a few pillows in the naptime area as I hear the large doors open. I walk out of the small, cozy alcove and see Vanessa talking with Sundrop. She perks up when she notices me and waves. "I heard you did pretty good today! Sundrop seems to think so at least." Sundrop grins at me as I approach. "Well that's good to hear, I had a lot of fun today actually, the kids here are so sweet."
"Actually, if you don't mind we might post you here in the daycare more often. Sundrop could use the help and you two seem to get along quite well."
Sundrop jumps up and down excitedly. I laugh nervously, "Ok calm down there buddy-"
I then turn to Vanessa, "My shift over? Or do you guys need me to patrol tonight?"
Vanessa shakes her head, "Nah, you're free to go, I'm covering night shift tonight."
A wave of relief washes over me, for I am extremely exhausted and really just want to go straight home and throw myself onto my bed.
"Awww, leaving so soon?" Sundrop whines, frowning.
"I'll see you tomorrow bud, but right now I am EXHAUSTED."
He finally gives up and lets me go, to my relief.
The drive home is peaceful and I pull into the driveway only ten minuets later. I hum a little tune as I pull out my apartment keys, preparing to open up the door. Once I do reach the door, I stop dead in my tracks.
Another dirty envelope lies on the welcome mat, the same blood red scrawl of letters written upon it. I pick it up and look around quickly, as if somehow expecting to catch sight of this anonymous person. Like I expected, I didn't find a single trace of life among the apartment corridors, the building itself being eerily quiet. I sigh agitatedly and turn the keys in the keyhole, entering my apartment. I throw the letter onto the kitchen table and go shower. Once I've refreshed myself and thrown on some clean and comfy clothes, I pick up the letter from the table and flop down onto my couch, holding said letter up in the air. Reluctantly, I peel back the envelope flap and pull out a small, yet again, handwritten note in, you guessed it, blood red ink.
