The rain's been on and off all day. Even then, it wasn't hard pretending that it never stopped. The window by their bedside, although cracked open, was scattered with racing raindrops. The cool breeze drifting through the window was noticeable under even the warmest blankets. Or with both hands around a steaming mug of cocoa. The sound of the softly pounding rain merged into the calm music, as did its smell with that of old books borrowed from the library.
Try as they might, Y/N couldn't imagine a better morning. They set their mug down for it to cool, already having burnt their tongue, and turn to a different page. "...I hope Zim isn't out today." They pause to voice their thoughts to the empty room before finishing another page. "Or that he at least brought the umbrella I gave him." And, after a short while, flipping through one more.
As if on cue, a phone rings on the kitchen counter. Y/N slips a bookmark inside and leaves the book for the moment. They slip the blankets off and walk over to the kitchen, not before taking a quick sip of their drink. Leaning casually on the counter, phone in hands, they answer the call.
"Hey, Zim. What's up?"
"You're late."
"...Late for what?"
"For your stupid human affection lesson, of course! You were supposed to be here ages ago!"
"I never agreed to come today. I told you I didn't want it to be a scheduled thing. I don't have to do this. And it stops being fun when it feels like I do. Besides, affection is about feeling good. I like it more spontaneously."
He mumbles a few complaints on the other side of the line. "Ugh, fine."
"Bye, darling."
"Darling...?"
"It's a term of endearment. In other words, a verbal display of affection. See? Spontaneous! I'll stop if it makes you uncomfortable."
"No, no. It's alright."
"'Kay, bye!"
"So long, my love." He hangs up before they even react.
--.. .. --
"I think the rain stopped for good this time." They said, leaning halfway out the open window.
A few raindrops slide down the leaves of the nearby tree, putting an end to the falling rain. The sky gradually clears into light blue, with only a few clouds scattered across its beautiful expanse.
Despite a lovely morning, they were far from disappointed by the change in weather. Y/N moves back inside and closes the window, deciding it's best to dry their hair (fresh out of a warm shower) before meeting with the chilly breeze.
They plug a blow-dryer into the wall and sit on the bed. Y/N finishes brushing and drying off their hair soon enough. Not long after, they hear a knock on the window. They gaze in the direction of the sound, locking eyes with a familiar pair the color of rubies. And most recognizably, a smug zipper-like grin.
They stay frozen for a moment in the same position, holding the blow-dryer and simply staring. The human blinks away their surprise and moves to open the window.
