I started grabbing all the ingredients for tonight's dinner and both of my parents and Grant sat at the breakfast bar stools. "So Grant, what have you been up to?" Alex asked, his slightly tan complexion glistening under my track light above the counter. "Well, I had originally gone to college when I got out but once Covid shut down every school I attempted to go to, I started a YouTube channel and I started recording with a fun friend group." Liam was sipping on the glass of whiskey he had poured about ten minutes after we entered my home. I got the lamb from the fridge and released it from the plastic keeping it fresh. I grabbed salt, pepper, rosemary, and garlic, some butter, and a pan from my cupboard. I start seasoning it as I see Alex and Grant talking to each other in a quiet voice. 'Dad, what are they talking about?' I signed and Liam shrugged his shoulders. 'Beats me, but if you want I can help you with the potatoes. They were my recipe before I taught you.' He says getting up and coming over to help me. I nod and start pan searing the lamb.

When everything was done cooking Liam helped me plate a good portion of everything on everyone's plates. I put one lamb chop on each of our plates while Liam used an ice cream scoop to put two scoops of potatoes on everyone's plate. I then added the asparagus that I was steaming in another pan onto everyone's plate before putting a plate in front of everyone and Alex said, "So Y/N... Has anyone caught your eye since you moved here to Texas?" I almost choked on the bite of asparagus in my mouth as I took a sip of water and shook my head. "Not really. Everyone is weird here. We went from New Yorkers who won't shut up when someone does one thing." Liam signed 'Hey!' being defensive of his hometown. "And California was ok, aside from the mountain lions taking my cat... Here it is a mix, with the addition of people who bring me pecan pie every other weekend." I say with a smile before I look over at Grant who was listening to every word I said. "If you don't mind me asking, what were you and Eddie talking about back at Pax. You scared him pretty bad, and he wouldn't talk to me that much till we all went back home." I blush and drink some more of my water as I try to think of something. I couldn't just tell him that I was threatening him not to tell him I liked him. "Uh.. I said something I was supposed to keep to myself after I was released from the Army and told him not to tell a soul." Both of my parents could tell that was a lie, but Grant seemed to accept it.

"So, Y/N... Have you thought about having a love life anytime soon?" Alex asked and I nodded. "There was a guy, but he didn't see me that way." I spoke and Liam signed towards Alex. "Well what about the guy from High School? Did you ever tell him?" Alex said and I shook my head, "I wish I did." I looked at the clock seeing it slowly tick away as I finished my plate. "Anyone want dessert? I made my blueberry pie." I asked and everyone tossed up a hand. I get up and grab it before cutting everyone a slice. When I gave everyone their slice we continued talking and answering questions.

I looked over and saw Alex nod at Grant, who was looking at him with a look I couldn't read. Alex and Liam got up and put their dishes in the sink before going to the living room. "Um.. Y/N, can I talk with you in the kitchen?" I nod and grabbed my dishes and followed Grant to the kitchen and put my dishes in the sink, turning on the water to rinse the dishes. "So, what did you want to talk about?" I ask, putting the rinsed dishes in the dishwasher. "After high school I didn't know if I'd ever see you again.. Back at the airport, when you told your parents we weren't dating, it hurt. But I know I should've told you or at least asked you before we graduated, hell I could've told you how I felt back in basics." I turned my body towards him to see him looking down. I could feel the sadness radiating off him and I hugged him. "I understand if you don't feel the same.."  He said and I looked up at him. "Grant.. I have felt the same way about you before we went to prom. I still kinda wished you had asked me to go as your date sometimes." I say and he chuckles. "Well... how about a date this next Wednesday?" I kissed him on the cheek and smiled as I answered, "Sure. Now were you gonna hand me your plate to rinse or were you going to rinse it yourself?" He blushed and made a motion for me to scoot over so I laughed and went and grabbed the dishes that still had food and throwing away the bones from the lamb and putting extra food in leftover containers. I brought the last of the dirty dishes over and he rinsed them and I put them in the dishwasher.

Grant and I walked into the living room to see my parents scramble to see what was on their phones. "So did you tell her?" Alex asked. "I don't know, you were listening. Did he?" I ask and Liam raises his hand. 'Dad, you aren't in school, but I have a date with Grant next Wednesday.' I signed and he gets excited. "Also, my feelings towards you is what I threatened Eddie with, not slipping up on Army shit." I say, Grant nods chuckling. "Ok father, and dad you are sleeping in the guest bed. I hear funny noises and I am tossing you outside." I say, Alex nods and Liam blushes. "Grant, if you have all of your stuff I can drive you back home." He nods and grabs his phone off the counter and we walk to the front door. Before we leave I call out, "Don't even think about doing a quickie, you thought you could do it last time." I say, ashamed I even had to tell them. "All right, to the Free Will- Mobile." I say, chuckling at my own joke.

We climbed in the car and I pulled a small cardboard box from the backseat and handed it to him, the cassettes inside rattling. "Choose a tape." I say. Grant looks in awe before asking, "We are in the 21st century... and you still have cassettes?" "Are you making fun of my cassette collection?" He shook his head and grabbed a tape. I took out the Led Zeppelin cassette from my car and put it in and can hear the slow build up of Highway to Hell through the car as I took it out of park and in reverse. When we arrived I smiled as he handed me back the box, I moved it to the back seat and when I turned back to face him, his warm lips met mine. After the shock left my body I kissed back before we had to break for dumb oxygen. "Well.. I-..Uh... Good night, Grant." I say flustered. "You too, honey bunch." He exited the car and as I made sure he got inside I put my fingers where his lips once were, questioning if I was hallucinating. I shook my head then headed back home.
