The Race

Cars, gas, and racing. That was my life. Every once in a while my best friend, Brian O' Connor would attend these drag races, held in the streets of L.A around 1:00 am. I would usually go and watch Brian kick his opponents asses, but I never really raced. Not until one night. It was February 15, 2001. At 1:30 am, to be exact was the time i participated in my first race. The race was a risk. I had put $50 on the line, which was all I had at the time. At 1:45 am the race began. I revved my engine, looked into the eyes of my opponent, and hit the pedal as hard as I could. My 1996 Mustang accelerated forward, going 20mph. My opponent's car was going 30mph when the race began. 10 more mph than mine! I didn't want to lose my first race, so with little thought I yelled out, "Oh Hell No!". I then grabbed the gear and shifted it to four, causing my car to push ahead, going a total of 80mph. "Haha! Now we're racing.". I exclaimed, with a big smile on my face, as the back of my car passed the front of my opponents. Brian was at the race. He was watching my driving every step of the way. And before the race started we decided to set up walkie-talkies, so that he could guide me in case I screwed up. Fortunately he didn't need to. The only time he called in, was when I was 100ft away from the finish line, while my opponent was 160ft away. He told me that I had this race in the bag. And so I did. I had won the race, but most importantly I got my money back, along with an additional $50. As soon as I parked my car, and got out, there were a herd of people just yelling and bawling out about the race. People started congratulating me from left to right. I didn't know what to do, so I just said, "Woah, woah, woah... There's plenty of this Pearce-apple pie to go around" with a slight grin. The feeling was indescribable. My mind just couldn't process everything that was going on. And to think that Brian gets this attention every race, was just unreal. I could remember specifically, Brian telling me that I'm a natural racer. Little did I know, this was only the beginning....
