Chapter 1: Rebirth

Start from the beginning

"I will oh-so-graciously give you a second chance at life. You'll wake up from this confining dream with the ability to see your nearby surroundings. Albeit, in a more rudimentary way," he remarked. You briefly wondered what he meant by that. "All I ask from you is a bit of assistance in obtaining some dominion in your world. Nothing too serious, just something to dip my toe in."

"Your world?" you pondered. Who - or what is this guy?

"I don't know about you, but this seems like a pretty generous offer. I wouldn't want to spend an eternity in this dark prison until I fade away . . . Would you?"

"N-no!" you instinctively spoke out to your own surprise. Since when were you able to speak out loud?

The voice chuckled. "I didn't think so. So . . . do we have a deal?"

Although you were still unsure of this whole ordeal, it was better than the alternative of being stuck in that dark abyss forever. But what did he mean by helping him gain dominion in this world? And promising that you'd be able to see your surroundings?! This was definitely someone with more power than you've encountered.

"How can I trust you?" you spoke out to the void. "I don't even know who, or what, you are . . . Will-will people be hurt if I help you?" you asked in a breathy voice.

"Oh, how rude of me to not have introduced myself. My name is Zalgo. And as for what I am, hmm . . . Just think of me as an otherworldly being. Not quite of your world, though I would like to have a bit more power there."

You could hear the smile in his voice, but you were uncertain whether there were sinister motives behind it.

"And as for people getting hurt, I have no plans or intentions of directly harming any humans. You have my word."

You took a deep breath to think it over. You felt better knowing that no one would get hurt from this deal. Would people getting hurt have you changed your mind? You didn't know. What you did know was that you really wanted to see Jack again. You had so many questions since the night you were told he was a "monster." You wanted to hear it from him, and you wanted to tell him how wrong he was for thinking so. You never could have expected that you wouldn't have the chance to talk to him again . . .

But this deal would give you that opportunity.

You took another deep breath to summon all the courage and determination you had left. "It's a deal," you announced.

The voice chuckled. "Excellent. The agreement has been made."

The darkness of the void suddenly vibrated. The suffocating feeling you had felt before returned tenfold. Slivers of darkness clung to your body and latched onto your skin, beginning at your feet and working its way up. Your breathing quickened as you were helplessly consumed by the void. As it neared your face, you sucked in a deep breath and shut your eyes, terrified of what would come next.

In a modest, wooden cabin where one of the rooms had been turned into a makeshift hospital room, a hooded figure with a navy-blue mask remained seated in a chair, bouncing his leg as he mindlessly stared at an unconscious girl laid down on a raised bed. Wires ran from her still body to various machines that monitored and maintained her vitals. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound that echoed through the cabin.

After a while of staring, the masked man sighed and lowered his head. He lifted his mask to the top of his hair and rubbed at his face with his cold hands. He was exhausted. He hadn't slept well in days, only dozing off when his body demanded rest from sleepless nights. He just didn't know what else he could do. The bare minimum was to be by her side, awaiting the moment she would wake from her coma.
