Jack groaned in frustration as he shook his head. Why wasn't she waking up?
After weeks, hope began to fade from his grasp . . .
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
Jack jolted at the quickening pace of the heart monitor. (Y/n)'s head rapidly shook from side-to-side as her body convulsed in the bed.
What was happening?!
Jack rushed to her side, shaking her in an attempt to wake her up from whatever nightmare was plaguing her mind.
"(Y/n)?! (Y/n), wake up!" Jack shouted, yet he was still met with unopened eyes. "(Y/n), please!"
(Y/n) suddenly sucked in one last breath before gently releasing it as she laid back down in stillness. The heart monitor sounded a single tone, filling the fresh quiet with its poison.
Jack's stomach dropped.
"No, no, no!" Jack panicked. "(Y/n), don't die on me!"
Without pause, Jack placed the heel of his hands on top of (Y/n)'s chest and started compressions. He paused after a minute to assess her condition, scared of possibly breaking her ribs but knowing that if it came down to her ribs or her life, he would choose the latter. The monotone sound from the heart monitor, however, was unrelenting.
"No . . . Please . . . "
He attempted another round of chest compressions, uncaring now whether or not he would break a rib. He just wanted her back.
After what seemed like an excruciatingly long minute, he was greeted with the same result.
Nothing.
(Y/n) was dead.
"No," was all Jack could say. He stumbled to a nearby wall and used it to steady himself, bracing his weight against it with one shaky hand.
CRACK!
In an instant, Jack hurtled his other hand towards the wall in a clenched fist. His knuckles split from the impact and black ooze dripped from where his skin made contact.
"No!" Jack shouted out to no one in particular, kicking over the chair he had sat and waited in for days on end. "No! No! No!"
In a blind rage, Jack carelessly knocked and toppled over several standing trays with various pieces of equipment on top of them, sending everything crashing to the ground. He huffed and clutched at his bloodied hand in the center of the room. Nothing but the heart monitor with its taunting cry was left standing.
Jack gritted his teeth and spared a glance at (Y/n)'s figure. The sight of her lifeless form caused him to immediately look away. He could feel streams of black sludge escape his eye sockets and creep down his face.
Jack let out a sniffle before dashing out of the room. He slammed through the main entrance of the cabin and ran out into the dark woods. He ran until his lungs and throat hurt, never once looking back at where he came. He ran without direction, bumping into and throwing himself away from trees that stood in his way. He ran and ran until he toppled over a hidden, sunken tire in the dirt.
Jack hissed and grabbed at his injured hand before slowly getting up from the ground with a mumbled "ow."
He looked towards where he had tripped and found an old, abandoned delivery van. Dust and branching foliage covered the rusted vehicle in its process of reclamation. It was practically impossible to make out the text that was drawn across the side of the van, not that it mattered as Jack figured that whatever goods it had once carried were long gone.
