We jumped, startled. The loud noise almost resembled a... an explosion? At this time of night? We whipped around at the same time. The dreadful hunch we both had had been the reality after all. Something had blown up on Zuko's ship. The boom was so monstrous, my ears rang even though I was a solid five hundred metres away. It shook the hill Iroh and I were on. Thick, black smoke billowed from the colossal fiery pillar engulfing the tower. A disaster.
My jaw dropped in shock.
"Zuko!" Iroh cried out.
Zuko was still in the boat.
We both bolted back into the ship, but I was faster. I had the wind on my side. I knew Iroh was not far behind me so I didn't hesitate to jump aboard. A few steps through what was left of the deck and I froze.
I couldn't. It was too hot. There was too much fire.
But Zuko was still somewhere inside!
But he also locked me in a room for over a month.
But Zuko is trying to capture Aang!
But Aang is a traitor!
But I need to learn firebending.
But Iroh is better at it and he's doing fine...
But Zuko is also the first person I trusted to talk to about what happened to me! Doesn't that count for something?
But...
But...
What was I supposed to do?
A voice echoed in my mind.
"No more buts! You will quit goofing off!" It lectured.
I recognized it. It was the grumpy monk from the temple. I imagined he got a kick out of ruining Aang and mine's fun.
A part of the tower fell, rumbling the floor. I shook myself out of my dilemma. The Avatar saves people. As much as it's hard to believe, Zuko is a person. Besides, I'd be betraying the monk's philosophy of respecting all life if I didn't save him.
A figure stumbled in the hall just outside the open door to the tower of the ship. Zuko.
He almost made it out, but the ceiling collapsed in front of him.
I felt a vaguely familiar rush. My eyes and tattoos felt hot, if that was even possible with the amount of heat already surrounding me.
I wasn't quite in control of myself. My mind was hazed over. I could see what was happening, what I was doing, but I didn't quite process it.
I bent a ginormous stream of water out of the ocean. I flattened it in mid air and used it to slash right through the entire tower a metre or so from the floor. A clean slice.
It slowly tipped over and it landed in the sea with a loud splash. I let the water splatter over the ship. It put out most of the fire.
I nearly floated over to Zuko's frame. He was crouched over on the floor, body racking with every cough.
My eyes and tattoos cooled off and I was suddenly aware of my surroundings. I barely caught myself as I felt half my energy drain from me. Must be a side effect of the Avatar State.
With my remaining energy, I hoisted Zuko up and slung his arm over my shoulder. We trudged over to the edge of the ship where Iroh had climbed up and rushed over to meet us halfway.
He slung Zuko's other arm over his shoulder so Iroh and I got the Prince off the still deteriorating ship.
We jumped off the ship and I created a soft gust of wind to soften our landing. After walking a bit to get out of the blast range of any debris from the boat, we assisted Zuko in laying down on the cool grass. Iroh and I crouched down beside him.
Most of his clothes were tattered and singed and he had some burns and cuts all over his skin. Fortunately, they were only minor.
"Zuko..." Iroh muttered in distraught. He lightly stroked Zuko's cheek.
"He'll be alright, General. Don't worry." I assured him.
Zuko weakly sat up, coughing out black smoke. I cringed at it.
"Hold your horses, Princey. That's a lot of soot coming outta your lungs." I warned, gently lowering him down onto his elbows.
"You saved me." He hoarsely uttered.
"Just doing my job." I pointed out.
Zuko coughed out another bit of soot then said, "Thank you, Y/n."
Y/n? He never called me that. It was always 'Avatar, do this' or 'Shut it, Avatar'. He never acknowledged even knowing what my name was.
"Um... you're welcome?" I answered, unsure of what exactly to say.
A short moment of silence followed before realisation hit me like a train. My glider! My nomad clothes! They were all still inside!
I stood turned around at an inhuman speed then fell back down on the ground. I gripped my hair and gritted my teeth in an effort to hold back my emotions. It was too late. Most of the ship was already submerged in the water.
"What?" Zuko questioned before it hit him too, "Oh, your airbender stuff."
I took a couple laboured breaths to try to calm myself and I turned back around to face the two guys.
"It's okay. This is okay. No one is hurt badly. I'm fine. This is fine." I reassured myself.
"What do we do now, Uncle?" Zuko asked, this time gingerly sitting up.
Iroh took a moment to ponder. His face lit up slightly once he came to a conclusion.
"I think I have an idea." Iroh replied.
This one is a short one but I didn't really know how to add more without ending the chapter. Also, next once I publish the next chapter, the story title will be different. I wasn't really sold on "Dual Avatar" in the beginning anyway, but I needed a title to start out with so I kept it. I knew i'd change it eventually. I think I'll change it to "Ablaze". Just letting y'all know so ur not confused hahaha
