Metal clanging resonated further away on the platform, but it wasn't unusual for the wind to cause such sounds, so you paid it no mind. That is until someone spoke.
'Ow!' you heard a voice you'd come to recognize speak.
You opened your eyes to see Vash kneeling on the ground not too far, rubbing his head with a pained look.
'Well, well, well,' you spoke up after muffling a giggle at the sight in front of you, 'isn't it the town's savior? What ch'you doing here? Shouldn't you be down there drinkin' the night away?
'Maybe, but doesn't feel right without my partner in crime, ya'know?' he slurred a bit as he got up and joined you on the railing. From up close you could see the flush on his face and smell the alcohol from his breath, but somehow, he still managed to give you one of his signature smiles that made you look away before anymore of that weird tightening sensation in your chest became unignorable.
You both stayed silent for a while, not feeling the need to fill the silence but also not knowing whether you could ask him whatever was on your mind. Finally, you broke.
'I've been curious,' you started.
'Yeah?' Vash followed up, turning his head to look at you.
'So.. have you, are you like a...plant or something?' you managed to ask in a tiny voice, turning to at him.
He exchanged a look with you, before he turned his eyes to the plant bulb in front of you two. After a moment he answered, 'yeah, yeah I am...Does that weird you out?'
'Ah? No, not really. I mean, it's kinda hard to get weirded out anymore after you've lived like a ghost for a while, ya' know?'
Vash looked surprised for a second but then started laughing quietly as he lifted a hand to hide his eyes. Your breath was caught in your throat at hearing him laugh so softy.
'You're really something, aren't you?' he added when his laughter died down.
You refused to look at him. Something with that man made you lose your composure and made you feel so exposed, and you were starting to think it might not be the simple fact that he could see you.
Several minutes passed in silence again, you didn't want to press Vash anymore and risk him leaving. That thought made you feel embarrassed at realizing how much you enjoyed his presence.
'I've been curious too,' he interrupted after some time.
'Mmh?' you simply answered, still looking away. He probably had more questions about your condition.
Unexpectedly, Vash pushed himself off the rail and went to stand in front of you. You blinked at him in confusion.
'Do you mind? I'd like to check something,' he added extending his fully covered left hand at you. You titled your head to the side, not following him.
'Ah, excuse me then.'
You jumped when he reached and grabbed your own hand pulling it forward. Instinctively, as the intense heat sensation grew in your limb, you tried to pull back. However, Vash's grip tightened on your wrist.
He stared directly at you with a pensive expression that held both fascination and worry. You broke eye-contact, struggling to keep composure under both his intense gaze and the burning heat propagating down your arm. It didn't feel painful as it felt that morning, but the magnitude it was reaching was starting to leave you out of breath.
What more did he want from you, you wondered with apprehension as your head was getting fuzzy when Vash lifted his half-gloved right hand toward your own that he still held firmly onto. Your heart rate picked up even more as you realized what he was planning on doing.
Your breathing had become shallow and you had stopped straining. Vash's uncovered fingers stopped mid-motion right next to yours as he looked at his hold on your hand and back at your face, almost as if he was suddenly unsure of himself. You knew he was staring at you, but felt too dizzy from the warmth radiating in your arm to care and too absorbed by the closeness of his exposed fingers to find the strength in you to look back up at him.
'Ah!' you gasped loudly when he finally held your hand with his right one. An electrical-like current surged where your skins had made contact and ran all the way up to your spine. Unwillingly, your body tensed up and you tugged on Vash's hold. You heard him inhale sharply as you did, his grip on you strengthening, sending more shocks down your limb.
'V-Vash..!' you managed to call with a shaky breath.
Looking back at him when he didn't respond, you noticed his focused gaze on your hands and his strained but dazed expression.
'Vash!' you called out louder.
He finally seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in and released your hand. You wasted no time taking your arm back and hugging it to your chest, still out of breath.
'Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean-' started hesitantly the blond man avoiding your eyes, a hand covering his lower face. Even in the dim light you could see his flushed cheeks, but knew you probably were just as red yourself.
After a moment, he let out an awkward laugh, putting a hand behind his head as he finally gathered the courage to look at you. He was smiling but you could sense he still wasn't completely over what had happened.
Feeling an awkwardness growing in the silence, you inhaled deeply and ran a hand through your hair to compose yourself before speaking, 'alright, let's bring ya back before the whole town goes looking for you, mister the savior.'
'Wouldn't be the first time a whole town searches for me,' he joked with a mischievous smile but still obediently followed you towards the entrance.
'I get it, I get it,' you replied sarcastically, not able to contain your own smirk as you raised your hands in fake defeat, 'you're super popular and everybody wants you!'
'Well, not everybody,' you hear him correct you.
You rolled your eyes but smiled. How did you ever think this man could help you stay sane? If anything, him and his antics were going to be the last push into crazy-land!
