Taking a step back, you exhaled loudly and wiped the few sweat beads that had formed on your forehead as you reviewed the data on the control panel in front of you. Plant #204 was no longer in a critical state and was showing rapid improvements despite only being treated at the same pace as the others. As for the other plants, they were also progressively regenerating and seemed to be more active with every day of treatment.
Ever since the failed connection attempt that took place a few days prior, you somehow had a much easier time reaching for the small source of energy inside your chest, the feeling having grow even more natural and almost painless- just like when you used it to become invisible.
Feeling spent for the day, you tapped on the brightly lit screen of the control panel to turn off the interface. You hesitated a moment, considering staying with the reassuring presence of the plants to rest, however you also desperately wanted a warm shower to wash the exhaustion of the day away.
And so, you walked to the automatic door, biting your inner lip as they slid open over the empty hall.
Knives hadn't come to see you ever since your confrontation with him, which both suited you but also greatly worried you as you half-expected him to be behind every door and corner, just waiting for you.
Making sure no one was indeed sneaking around down both sides of the hall, you started making your way in direction of your 'room'.
Wandering down the uniformly bland metallic hallways of the upper levels of the tower, you absent-mindedly wondered if it was day or night outside at the moment, or what phase the moons were in. You wished you had access to a widow that gave to the outside. You scoffed at the thought. When you had been here all those years ago, you didn't even know what the outside looked like, nor did you care for it. Afterall, your whole existence had purely revolved around pleasing Knives and avoiding pain.
But now, what you wouldn't give to see just a glimpse of the infinite sea of stars at night or the burning orange skies at dawn.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when you were about to turn a corner but your body suddenly froze in place. Frowning, you willed it to move, tensing your muscles to the best of your abilities. However, nothing happened. Your limbs refused to budge even an inch.
Someone was here, you soon realized even before hearing the footsteps closing in behind you.
'Subject M3 "Thessalia", Doctor William Conrad's autonomous experiment dating back over fifty-three years, disappeared for twenty-seven years and yet shows no signs of external aging- all other information is redacted or inaccessible even with my clearance.'
You shuddered at hearing your experiment code, the memories associated with it only being painful and gruesome ones. And yet, you couldn't show how it destabilized you as you recognized the voice speaking almost immediately, even before your body turned around to face him against your will.
'Legato Bluesummers, unnumbered Gun'ho Gun, head-operative that oversees both the Eye of Michael and Knives'-'
'Master Knives,' he corrected you with a threatening tone as he closed the distance between the two of you.
You didn't resume your sentence, your point having been made; he might have looked you up, but so had you ever since he had offered to torture you only a few days ago. Even if your search had been less than successful because of your lowered level of access, it seemed your file was still highly confidential which worked in your favor in this situation.
Glaring at him as he stopped several feet before you, you refused to let him think he was intimidating you in any way.
'Explain to me how such an impertinent and arrogant thing as you has gained favors from Master Knives? Why would he show any pity or patience towards you?'
