'Disgusting. You've become as shameless as them Thess,' replied Knives with a curled lip accentuating his repulsion at your actions.
Still, after a moment where he simply stared at you with pure aversion and hatred, he gestured once, making his blades flock back into his cloak.
'However, I will make sure to rid you of those revolting behaviors once we are back- willing or not,' he spit with venom at you, the promise of making you regret what you had just done plain as day.
Nonetheless, as he turned and went to walk way, you couldn't care for whatever that promise entailed. Letting out a deep exhale, your shoulder slouched and tension left your body all at once at no longer being under direct danger of losing your life. And yet, your battle was not over yet; the most challenging fight was still to come.
'Luck! Don't! You're not going with him! Nai, I'm not letting you take her!'
Vash's yells made your chest sting. You went to look at him as he stumbled unto his feet, his stubbornness taking over as he went to try and run to get you. Luckily, you could count on the preacher to hold his end of the unspoken agreement you'd made when he had exchanged a look with you earlier.
'Please!' you mouthed silently, pleading him with your eyes even if he was already sprinting towards the injured criminal.
'What-? Wolfwood, let go! Don't you dare!'
The blond man's outcries as he wrestled against the priest hold were hoarse with desperation. Wolfwood grunted, struggling to keep the blond man in place, the distress giving the latter the strength to ignore and fight even with his grave injuries.
You bit your quivering lower lip, breath shaky as you went to speak.
'I'm sorry Vash' you spoke with a raspy voice, trying to fight the tears forming in your eyes and the pressure in your upper chest.
'Luck, don't!'
His call was demanding, holding authority even if it was cracking with sorrow, as he tried to convince you, or maybe coerce you into staying. It made you stomach churn and fall to your feet, the weight of the guilt oppressing you and crushing your insides.
'I'm really sorry,' you resumed, swallowing down on a sob trying to make its way out and muffling it with your hand. But, no matter how much effort you put into keeping your composure, you still could not stop the tears streaking down your dusty face and the occasional sob shaking your shoulders.
'Thank you,' you whispered, eyes glancing at an exhausted Wolfwood, straining to hold back his companion. He barely kept up eye contact, breaking it after an instant, culpability at his current actions eating at him, perhaps even his inactions at the previous events.
You wished he wouldn't beat himself too much over it. You hoped Vash wouldn't be to upset at him, because, afterall, wasn't it all your fault in the end? The priest had nothing to feel guilty about, but you didn't have the time to explain it to him; a simple thanks was all you could afford in this moment- your time was limited.
Bringing your teary eyes down to Vash's own watery ones, your knees almost buckled at the pain you saw in them.
In that instant, you couldn't help but hope he had faked it all, that he was still faking it even now- otherwise, if the agony you saw seep out of his clear-blue eyes was genuine, you would never be able to forgive yourself.
If his suffering was authentic, you would have commited the worst sin of them all; you would have sentenced this angel to hell.
Still, living hell was better than death...Or was it? You had considered ending it all several times during your lonely years as a ghost, but had never found a method that would work or the courage to try even if you had found one. So, was condemning this gentle creature of a man to equivalent pain really better?
