Platonic.
For Huckleberry-Hounds.
(Context: y/n is around 16 of 17 in this and is Grace Augustine's niece,
who's mother died while giving birth to y/n).

~*~

"Hey, y/n. Can I ask you something?" Kiri tapped your shoulder as you were sitting with Norm on the computer.

"Sure, Kiri. What's up?"

"You know how we can't breathe the same air. Does that mean we can't eat the same food?"

Y/n looked over at Norm, hoping he would know the answer. Norm wasn't paying attention until y/n slapped him lightly. "Ow!"

"Oh, come on, Norm that didn't hurt. We have a question, can humans and Na'vi eat the same food?" Norm paused for a moment, and grabbed one of his books. He scanned across for a few seconds then shut the book.

"Good question, however we haven't really researched that part yet. Although I think some of the foods that Na'vi eat can't be eaten by us, y/n. But I have good news."

"What?" Y/n and Kiri asked.

"Both your mother's used to do a lot of cooking together when they taught at the school years ago. I think your mother was pregnant with you, y/n. The kids wouldn't stop rubbing her belly to congratulate her." Norm laughed at the memory. "Now, the good news is I have a recipe they made together for a meal with the students. It's called 'Paella.' It's full of fish and vegetables."

"Oh my god, I love Paella, come on, Kiri, let's go. There's stuff in the fridge." Y/n grabbed Kiri's hand and took her to the kitchen.

~*~

"So, how does this exactly work?" Kiri asked, avoiding the door frame due to her height as she came in with the bowl of Paella, they had been working on it for the past hour together.

"Well, mum's recipe shows us how to work the oven and the pans to cook, so we can just go from there."

"What's an oven?"

"Think of it as a fire to cook your food, but in a metal container and a door for safety." Y/n turned on the oven. "Ok, and we can just put that in, now we wait until the timer goes off." Y/n started to clear up the kitchen and placed two plates on the table.

"Hey, y/n...?"

"Yeah, Kiri?"

"Don't you find it weird?"

"What weird?"

"That we're cousins, but different species." Y/n froze, they both knew this conversation would come up, they just never thought about it that much. They knew they were technically cousins, but because of who they were, they couldn't fully live in eachother's worlds.

"I guess it's a bit... strange. Especially since Neteyam, Lo'ak and Tuk are my cousins as well. But I don't have an avatar, I'm just a human."

"Do you want one?" Kiri was curious.

"Kinda, yes. But I don't think I qualify."

"Y/n, what was my mum like?" Y/n was silent before thinking of an answer for Kiri.

"All I remember was her bright red hair, and her kindness, and that necklace you're wearing." Y/n pointed to Kiri's neck. "She was the bestest auntie ever." Y/n was about to say more before Kiri brought them into a hug, despite the height difference, y/n hugged her back too.

"I'm sure your mum would've been an amazing aunt too." Kiri's words brought tears to y/n's eyes, and they hugged Kiri harder. Just then the timer went off for the Paella to be ready.

"Hey cousin, we heard something ping. What did we run into?" Lo'ak, Spider, Neteyam and Tuk came in, wearing their air masks.

"Hey guys." Y/n sniffed. "Just talking about our mothers."

"Oh, do you want us to leave?" Spider asked.

"No, no. Besides, we made something for us all. It's Paella." Y/n brought it out the oven.

"Did someone say 'Paella'? Haven't heard of that since Grace and her sister made...oh god, that's exactly how they made it." Jake and Neytiri came in as well to find the other kids. "Y/n, where did you find this?" Jake asked you.

"Norm found the recipe they followed."

"I remember Grace bringing that into the school. Can we try it?" Neytiri questioned.

"Of course, let's all try it!" Kiri handed out portions to everybody. They ate slowly, then quickly as they all rejoiced in the food. Lo'ak and Tuk argued on who would have extra helpings.

"Y/n, I think you'll need to make more to keep them from killing eachother." Neteyam commented.

"It shall be my honour." You both joked.

"Hey, y/n, Kiri, Norm said he found something." Jake called as you both followed him to Norm. "This was from 17 years ago, when I first started here." Jake handed you a picture: it was him when he was human, Grace; her bright red hair and necklace glimmering. And y/n's mother, pregnant with them.

"Jake...I don't know what to say." Y/n was nearly at the verge of tears, Kiri too.

"When your mother died. All Grace did was look after you. I know you don't remember much but she was so kind and caring, even when doing the avatar programme. I saw it first hand...she would play with you constantly."

"Thank you, Jake. You don't know how much this means to us." Y/n smiled.

"We could keep it here. And we can both see it everyday. And make more food together!" Kiri said.

"That would be the best thing in the world, cousins forever?" Y/n held out a pinkie.

"Cousins forever." Kiri interlocked her pinkie with y/n's, a promise. Forever.

The end.
