"It isn't OK," Rogers cut in, taking over before Stark blew up at him, though he didn't look much more patient himself. "We agreed to let you join the Avengers under the conditions you followed the rules we set and you have basic respect for us and you lost the attitude. You haven't done any of that yet."
"And, what, you want me to change my ways?" he asked with sarcasm. "Because it isn't going to happen. And anyway, I do respect your authority, or I wouldn't come back to the Tower – or Compound or whatever. I get very bored when you do shit like this or you make some stupid decisions, so I stir up chaos. The attitude is going nowhere. And it isn't like I break rules that often, for a chaos god." He raised his shoulders in a shrug, smirking. "I think you two just don't like me very much."
"You make it very hard to like you," Stark said, frankly. "I'm amazed Jamie and Peter like you so much."
"That's the difference between the older generation and the younger generation, I suppose."
"You're just a bad influence."
"Not gonna argue with that."
"Hey," Rogers said, interrupting the two of them. He stared down Stark first, and Loki remembered that the captain actually disliked Stark about as much as he himself did. He often forgot that fact. "No need to bring the kids into this. It's not them who are in trouble." And he turned back to Loki, and he considered briefly disabling the All-Speak ability so he didn't have to understand English anymore. Then remembered the All-Speak couldn't be switched off. Fuck.
"If you really respected us as much as you think you do, you'd show it," Rogers said, and Loki used his telekinesis to hover in a crossed leg sitting position in mid air. This was going to take a while – the grilling always did – so he might as well get comfortable. Stark looked him over, a brief surprised glance crossing his face at first, which made him smirk. "You wouldn't condescend us and outwardly disobey the rules at every possible moment."
"It's called chaotic banter, Rogers."
"And I love chaotic banter as much as the next person," he replied, and Loki nearly fell out the air when he spluttered a laugh at that, "but there's a time and a place for it."
"Whatever, Rogers. This place took all my freedom, it isn't taking the way I am too," he said, rolling his eyes. Before either of them could combat his opinion, he changed the subject. "Anyway, I forgot most of the rules. You'll have to refresh my memory."
Rogers scowled a scowl to rival Stark's, but cooperated. "Well, there's the no magic rule," he said pointedly.
Yep, definitely referencing the fact he was sitting on the air, and he let out a small laugh. "Oblivious mortals, as always. No magic is such a pointless rule. You don't understand not every single action I perform is magic. Telekinesis, for example, is not magic, it's a mental ability I happen to possess, and that's very different to incantations and shit," he pointed out. "Now I would love to give you a crash course in the ways of how magic works but I wouldn't want to waste your evening."
"You've been teaching Maximoff magic," Stark spoke up.
"So you'd rather she gets no coaching at all and causes tragedies left right and centre? Suit yourselves. Let me know when you find someone more qualified."
"There's the rule of no using knives."
"That started out as no stabbing, if I remember correctly. Big difference. No wonder I got confused."
"No teleporting."
He threw his hands up in the air. "Why the hell waste time and energy walking?! I don't understand that one. I'm out on patrol, hear someone being murdered a mile away, and just take a leisurely stroll there? Someone breaks into the Tower, we let the closest person deal with it? I think you're just jealous you can't teleport."
