Chapter Two

Callie woke up refreshed the next morning from a good night's sleep. Something that rarely happened due to the nightmares that plagued her almost every night. She got up after just laying there and went to go take a shower and just get ready for the day.

Once showered, makeup done, hair done, and dressed, Callie grabbed Riptide, her keys, and purse before exiting the apartment. She was starving! Furnished the apartment maybe, but there was no food in the place. Callie had looked through the welcome packet last night before bed and saw that Coffee & Delights was nearby so that was where she was heading to start the day.

Stepping inside, she immediately breathed in the smell of the coffee beans and baked goods. She got in line behind a black-haired teen whose attention was completely engrossed on his phone.

"I can help who's next!" a barista called, but the teen didn't hear, too engrossed in his phone. Callie reached out and touched his shoulder gently.

He jumped and jerked his head around to meet her eyes. "Sorry to bother you, but you're next."

He blushed in slight embarrassment, ducking his head. "Uh, thank you." He stepped forward and placed his order, stepping off to the side to wait for his like the ones before him. Callie wasted no time and stepped up when she was motioned to.

"Good morning, miss. I would like a grande mocha frappe with an extra shot of expresso, and one of those delicious cinnamon rolls," Callie heard the teen that was before her curse softly under his breath as if remembering that he didn't order anything to eat. "Actually, make that two cinnamon rolls, packaged separately please, and that'll be it."

The barista cashed her out quickly and Callie stepped off to the side to wait patiently for her order. Surprisingly the teen's order and Callie's orders were called out at the same time. Callie grabbed one of the boxes containing a cinnamon roll and offered it to the teen. The teen looked at her puzzled.

"What's this for?"

Callie smiled. "I can practically hear your stomach growling, dude. It looks like you need some sustenance to go with your coffee, so go ahead. I got one for myself as well." The teen had no choice but to take it as she shoved the box into his chest as she turned to grab her own drink and boxed goodie.

"Uh, thanks, again. I appreciate it. How much do I owe you, miss?" he asked.

Callie shook her head as they walked out of the shop together. "Don't worry about it."

The teen looked a little puzzled and amused as he regarded her. "You have no idea who I am, do you?"

"Nope. Do you know who I am?"

"No..."

"Great! That would have been awkward! Let's rectify that though. I'm Callie." She shuffled her items in her hand to offer her hand and he readily shook it firmly.

He laughed softly as he returned her handshake. "I'm Tim, it's a pleasure to meet you, Callie." They settled down in one of the tables outside of the shop as they continued to talk. "I'm guessing you are from out of town?"

"I am! Today is my official first day. I arrived yesterday and just got settled in only to realize that I have no food in my apartment."

"Where are you from?"

"New York. You?"

"Gotham, born and raised. What brings you to Gotham?" Callie felt her smile on her face drop slightly at the question as it brought up some past memories but she was quick to push past it.

She shrugged. "It's close enough to New York that if my family needs me, I can get there quickly but far enough away they can't just drop by."

Tim quirked his lips. He noticed the slight mood change but didn't say anything. "I wish I could do that."

"Annoying family?"

"Yes! I live at home still with my dad and," here he seemed to hesitate a bit before continuing, "my two little brothers: Damian and Duke. Then my older brothers pop in at the most random times and just about annoy me half to death! Especially when they all gang up on me."

"Ah, classic middle child syndrome."

"No, nothing is classic about my family."

"That's how everyone feels, Tim, but every family also has its own uniqueness that makes it special to those individuals." Callie said softly. Tim was silent as he contemplated about her words, he had barely noticed that he had not only eaten his cinnamon roll but also Callie's when she slid it in front of him. She had inherited some of Sally's maternal instincts and they were screaming at her that not only did Tim not eat enough, but he also probably didn't get enough attention or appreciation at home.

"Tim?" He looked up and met her eyes. "Would you like to accompany me to the store so I can get some groceries? I find myself not quite done with our conversation."

His blue eyes lit up even as he drained the last of his coffee. "Sure! I'll take you to the nearest one. It's a couple blocks away and they offer same day delivery services if you pay a fee." They stood up and threw their trash away. Tim blinked at the two cinnamon roll boxes that were placed in front of his seat. "Di-did you give me your cinnamon roll?"

Callie winked at him. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Tim. Let's get going." And started walking down the sidewalk.

Tim watched her. "Other way."

"I knew that."
