"If! That's the key word Jack. If. I can't handle knowing if they can't."
"I'll go. I'll talk to them. I'll find out if they can or not."
She closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around herself.
"I don't know."
"I've lived for so long Elsa. The loneliness. The pain. The heartbreak. All without a family. You could avoid a fate like that. You could fall in love and have children and grow old with your lover. Don't you at least want a chance to have that?"
She laughed bitterly, and he took a small step back.
"That's cute. That you'd think I'd ever find someone. Or have children. I gave up on grandure illusions that my future had that in store for me. If I am to die of old age, it would be at my sister's side."
"Fine. Then do it for Anna. Tell me where to find the trolls."
* * * * *
He landed in the little valley she had marked for him on a map, glancing up at the empty field. There were no trolls here. Just mossy rocks.
"Real mature princess."
He crumpled up the map, throwing it on the ground. How the hell was he supposed to help someone who didn't want it? He sank down onto one of the rocks, thinking it over. Kristoff had to know where the trolls lived. Maybe he could get Olaf to ask. Or ask Olaf if he knew. Suddenly the rock under him shifted, and he shot into the air. The rock unrolled, a creature of stone appearing.
A troll. Were all the rocks trolls?
"Who did that?" A gravely voice shouted, and another troll unraveled.
"Hi, I'm Jack Frost. I didn't mean to star-"
"Stop shouting, you'll wake everyone!"
"You're shouting too!"
"Only because you are!"
Shit. He hadn't thought that maybe they couldn't see him. Most magical creatures could see each other.
"That's enough." A deep voice called, and he looked up, locking eyes with another troll.
This one looked older, the stone face worn with time.
"Go back to resting."
The trolls below him grumbled, rolling back up. He flew over to the older one, giving a small wave.
"Hi. I'm Jack."
The troll waved his arm, turning and walking away from the group of sleeping trolls. He followed silently, and the troll led him to a small cave that looked to be its home. He landed on his feet, admiring the crystals adorning the lower shelves.
"Jack Frost. Welcome. I am called Grand Pabbie."
He grinned, happy to be recognized. Grand Pabbie sat down at a table, one filled with crystals, papers written in a language he didn't understand, and moss. Lots of moss.
"Thank you. I know I shouldn't have intruded, but I desperately need your help."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. You, you've met El- princess Elsa, haven't you?"
He knelt in front of the elder troll, who's expression fell.
"I assumed she would eventually come seeking answers. I didn't however, expect her to send a guardian."
"She doesn't really want me here."
The elder sighed, picking up a mug from the table.
"Thirsty?"
