Tokoyami's feathers ruffled. "Revelry in the dark..."
"Tokoyami-kun, this sort of thing is right up your alley, huh?" you mused.
"I won't be outdone. The darkness is my shroud."
"Sure, sure."
You giggled. He was usually pretty good at hiding his emotions, but you could sense just how eager he was to start. Your internship with Hawks had revealed an unexpectedly cute side to him as well.
According to the Pussycats, Quirks and any scaring tactics were fair game, but the scaring group wasn't allowed to directly touch or harm anyone. Tiger went on to say that the winner would be the class who was not only the most creative, but also made the most people piss their pants with fright.
"Piss their pants?" you frowned. "But Mineta-kun isn't here, so I doubt that's going to happen."
"[Name]-chan, you can be pretty harsh sometimes, huh?" Izuku chuckled wearily. He blinked, suddenly realizing something. "Wait... Mineta isn't here? Why not?"
You stretched your arms out. "He was trying to grab my butt earlier today, so I put a laxative in his curry."
"So cruel! I didn't know you could be so mean! A-And why do you have laxatives with you anyways?"
"I brought them for this exact reason," you said, as if it were obvious.
Izuku scrunched up his brows. "Wait, but... five people are already gone because of the remedial lessons, plus Mineta, which makes six... there are twenty-one of us, so..."
"Now, come up and draw your lots!"
"Wait-!"
"Oh, sweet!" you cheered, turning towards your partner with a smile. "Tokoyami-kun, we get to be together! What was that you were saying earlier? Um... revelry in the dark, right?"
"Indeed," he nodded.
You would be the first pair to enter the forest, which made you giddy and nervous at the same time. Izuku had gone completely pale and was lamenting over the fact that he'd ended up all alone. Maybe the Pussycats would let him join one of the groups near the end.
Katsuki stomped over towards you. "Oi, bird-face! Switch with me!"
"Hm? Oh..."
The blonde had ended up with Shouto, who was just as passive as always, if not a bit irked by his partner so desperately wanting to get away from him. Katsuki grabbed you by the wrist and started pulling you away.
"[Name], you're with me," he declared.
"Um, I don't think that's how it works."
"Shut up! If I say it's fine, then it's fine!"
"But Tokoyami-kun and I are already committed to our revelry in the dark."
"Indeed," Tokoyami said again.
Pixiebob shook her head. "Save the arguing for later, kitties. No changing pairs! This is all part of the experience. [Name]-kitty, and bird-kitty, you two are up first!"
"I gotta go now," you protested, pushing Katsuki away from you. He was practically throwing a fit. Honestly, it was pretty embarrassing.
"[Name], you suck!"
"I'll play with you later, okay?"
"Eat shit!"
You waved everyone off and ventured into the forest. It really was dark. You'd barely stepped foot inside, but already the lights from the lodge had almost completely disappeared behind you. It was your first time doing something like this. You'd gone to haunted houses and stuff like that with Mikael and your other friends before, but this felt so much more real.
"We're the first ones, so I don't know what to expect," you said, glancing all around you. Tokoyami seemed so assured; well, he was in his element, after all. You felt a lot better having someone like him by your side.
"I'm not familiar with everyone's Quirks from the other class," he acknowledged, "so it may be a bit difficult to predict what sort of tricks they'll try."
"It sucks that we can't prank them by fighting back, huh?"
"That brute Bakugou has been wearing off on you, hasn't he?"
"Yeah, that might be true-ahhh!" You jumped back, practically leaping into Tokoyami's arms. A girl's head had just popped out from the ground right in front of you. Tokoyami stammered out in protest, doing his best to hold you steady.
"Kekeke!" a voice laughed, and one of the students from Class B-Honenuki-peeked out from the bushes to get a good look at you. "We got you! Though you didn't scream as loud as we'd hoped..."
Tokoyami awkwardly cleared his throat. "[Name]... would you please get off me now?"
"Oops, sorry about that." You looked back at the students and let out a sigh. "That really caught me off-guard. Be careful popping up like that, okay? I almost kicked you in the face."
"Get going now! We need to get back in place for the next pair!"
You kept on walking, heart pounding in your chest. "Yikes... do you think there'll be more of them along the way? Probably, right? At least up until we get to Ragdoll at the halfway point."
"It should be fine. Just... try to refrain from jumping on me," he commented shyly.
"Ha-ha, will do."
In spite of the scare you'd just gotten, it was quite nice, taking a nighttime stroll like this. If you'd been out with a bigger group and not for the whole "test of courage" thing, it would've probably been pretty relaxing.
The rest of the trail wasn't too bad. You didn't scare all that easily, and there were no more heads popping out of the ground, so your threshold for spooking was going to be pretty hard to overcome from here on. You eventually made it to the halfway point and collected your card from Ragdoll.
Your ears perked up. "Oh, I can hear people screaming behind us. Sounds like Jirou-chan and Hagakure-chan. I wonder if Shouto-kun and Katsuki-kun got scared?"
"Something that would scare Bakugou..." Tokoyami sighed and shook his head. "If such a horrifying thing exists, I'd rather not know about it."
"You're pretty funny, Tokoyami-kun."
"It wasn't my intention, but I'm flattered you think so."
"By the way," you frowned, scrunching up your nose, "do you smell that? It's almost like something's burning. Do you think they started a bonfire back by the lodge?"
"I don't think we'd be able to smell it from this distance." He narrowed his eyes. "Hey... what is that? Some smoke's creeping in from over there..."
"Huh? Oh, you're right-"
Your body went flying. You didn't know what had happened, or where it had come from, but the next thing you knew, you were fallen on the ground, a deep gash running down your arm and dripping blood. You squinted, vision still blurry from the sudden impact. Tokoyami was hovering over you, expression twisted into panic. It looked like he was yelling, but you were too shaken up to make sense of what he was saying.
You craned your neck to the side, face turning pale.
"...couldn't get any... flesh... such pretty blood... ahh... I can't be distracted..."
What the hell...?
A figure dressed all in black was hobbling over towards you. A man, with his arms straight-jacketed together, his face entirely covered with the exception of the clamps pulling his lips all the way back to reveal gums and teeth.
"Don't tempt me any further," he cooed. "I have... work to do."
You looked at him, then back towards your bleeding wound. You remembered Aphrodite hiding behind the tree the other day, her expression looking more unsettled than you'd ever seen it. At that moment, all you could do was let out a weary groan.
"I have such bad luck."
