shiho whipped her head around to see kunimi standing by the door.

he was mad.

"what. the fuck. did you do?" he repeated, taking a step towards her.

"i— she was— akira, listen—"

"shut up." kunimi ignored shiho—despite fucking asking!—who was desperately trying to explain what had happened, and rushed straight to watanabe.

"look at what you did!!" kunimi snapped, wiping watanabe's tears and helping her up.

yeah no, self-restraint was not something shiho knew at the moment.

shiho was enraged, overcome with everything she had been bottling up ever since watanabe had forced her way into her life.

"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN, LOOK AT WHAT I DID?" she yelled back, her eyes stinging with tears.

"THAT GIRL HAS BEEN ANTAGONIZING ME FOR MONTHS, KUNIMI! DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW SHE'S BEEN TREATING YOUR BEST FRIEND? SHE CALLED ME A FUCKING SLUT!"

"SHE SAID I ONLY BECAME THE MANAGER TO GET CLOSER TO TOORU!" she yelled, repeating what watanabe had said.

"that's not true! why would i ever say that to someone?! i can't believe you'd accuse me of something like that!" watanabe was clinging to kunimi and crying.

and while kunimi was busy digging around in his bag for tissues, watanabe smiled.

kunimi didn't catch it, but shiho did.

that creepy, condescending, malicious, venomous smile of hers.

she curled her hands into fists, digging her nails into her skin so hard she thought she might draw blood. anything to distract her from the other pain she was being subjected to.

"wait here until i come back. we need to have a fucking talk," kunimi spat when he failed in finding tissues, taking watanabe by the arm. "i'm taking her to the nurse."

shiho rolled her eyes as kunimi pulled watanabe along, who was still putting on that pathetic act of the victim.

once the room emptied, she stalked over to the wall and slid down, burying her head in her knees. she yelled angrily into the emptiness, the tears she'd been holding in spilling out all at once.

shiho tried to regain her composure before kunimi came back, not wanting to let him see her in this state. it was about time that she too had a talk with kunimi.

ten minutes later, kunimi returned to the classroom. shiho stood up to face him as he slid the classroom door shut and glared at shiho. "what the hell is your problem, akira?"

shiho laughed. a bitter sound. "wow, so you aren't even going to call me shiho now? is that how much i've been downgraded since you've started dating watanabe?"

"so that's the problem? me dating mia? what, was that just an act out of jealousy? what is your problem? can't you just be happy for me? you say we're best friends, but you can't even accept the fact that i have a girlfriend and accuse her of stealing me from you. i wasn't even "yours" to begin with!"

"BE HAPPY FOR YOU?!" shiho was really going to lose it.

"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU EXPECT?! THAT I WOULD BE HAPPY FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU FUCKING NEGLECTED ME? BECAUSE YOU WERE SOOOO INTERESTED IN WATANABE AND FORGOT ABOUT ME? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU EVEN BOTHERED TO TALK TO ME?"

the boy opened his mouth, but shiho didn't let him get anything out.

"YOU CAN'T REMEMBER, RIGHT? IT WAS FOUR FUCKING MONTHS AGO, KUNIMI. YOU HAVEN'T TALKED TO ME—AND I MEAN TALKED FOR MORE THAN TWO SENTENCES—IN THREE WHOLE FUCKING MONTHS."

the tears came.

"HAVE YOU EVEN STOPPED TO CONSIDER HOW I FELT?! HOW I WAS ABANDONED BY MY OWN BEST FRIEND? WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO THAT?!"

shiho was uncontrollably crying, furiously wiping away at her tears as she let out everything that had been clawing at her, killing her for the past few months.

"i loved you, akira. and you knew it. we always wrote it off as a joke, but my feelings? they definitely weren't a joke," she continued, voice breaking.

"i've loved you for two years, akira. two whole years. and then watanabe comes along and manages to make you love her in less than half a year."

"she has everything i have ever wanted for the past two years."

"do you— do you even know how much that fucking hurts?"

she looked up to face akira, her face blotchy red and stained with tears. she saw kunimi's expression falter for just a moment—it was short, but she noticed.

his expression quickly returned back to the cold glare.

"there's no point in loving me if i don't love you back," he said matter-of-factly. ouch.

"can't you take a hint? i've rejected you every time you've ever asked me out. whether it be a joke or not. i like mia, not you. why can't you just move on and let me be happy?"

"because i still love you. no matter what your answer was, i loved you. i hate that watanabe was the one who was able to get you to say the words that i wished you would say to me."

"i hate that i get jealous every time you guys are together. i hate that i wasn't good enough that you couldn't return my feelings."

shiho laughs. a wet, miserable, bitter sound.

"don't you get it, kunimi akira?"

"i hate everything, everyone—even myself—but not you."

"i can't fucking bring myself to hate you. and that sucks. because i should be hating you for how you've treated me, and how watanabe has treated me. i should be treating you equally as shitty so you would at least understand how shitty i felt these past few months."

"but i fucking can't. and i hate it."

shiho focused her gaze on the dirty ground, unable to look kunimi in the eyes. she wiped at her tears that just wouldn't stop, no matter how much she willed for it to.

there was a painfully long moment of silence.

and then it came;

"i don't want to be around you."

shiho snapped her head up. "excuse me?"

"i said, i don't want to be around you. i have no intentions of being friends with a— with a jealous prick who hurt the people i love."

shiho couldn't believe the words that had just come out of her best friend's mouth. she laughed. in disbelief. in bitterness, anger, hurt. "so that's how it is?"

"fine. i don't want to be friends with an unloyal bitch anyway."

with that, shiho pushed past kunimi and left the classroom, not bothering to look back as kunimi yelled her name.

now she knew how he truly felt about her.
