The game had come to somewhat of a standstill at the 3 minute point. All of the players left were fast, agile, and had a good throwing arm. The weak had been weeded out. Everybody dodged everybody else's throws and they seemed to be so high on adrenaline that they were just sprinting, leaping, and throwing everywhere without showing even an ounce of exhaustion. It did dampen my mood a little, so I just turned to In-Ho.
"Whatcha doin?" I asked.
He looked at me weirdly.
"Same as you, clearly."
"How busy would you say you are on a scale of 8-9?"
He turned over to me slightly and raised his eyebrow before giving his attention back to the flatscreen.
"What an odd scale."
"In-Ho, I'm no mathmatologist, but that seems like a lot."
He looked at me as though I was slightly crazy, but I didn't know if they had SpongeBob here in Korea, so his reaction was valid. He chose to ignore me though, and I looked at the game to see if anything had changed. Surveying the number of players, it had not. How boring. It was 28-24, and it seemed like the blue would keep holding their own, so I felt it a waste of time to keep staring at it and expecting something to happen.
"Okay, quick survey, are you busy busy or just busy?" I asked.
He sighed.
"You're tireless."
I laughed and thought that maybe I should explain where the conversation was from to prevent him from thinking I was going insane.
"It's from an American Cartoon. The main character, a really energetic and childish sponge, asks his neighbor, a terribly grumpy squid, everything I asked and of course the squid gets mad because SpongeBob is annoying."
He arched a brow at me, amused.
"'SpongeBob'?"
I realized how weird it would sound to people who weren't exposed to the show early on.
"Yeah. SpongeBob SquarePants. Guess what shape of pants he wears?"
He rolled his eyes, expecting that he would obviously get the question write because the answer was in his name.
"Square?"
I shook my head, chuckling.
"No, they're actually pretty rectangular."
He smirked a little, and I looked back at the game.
"It is kind of entertaining. Unless you have something else to do. We should watch it sometime."
He looked at me for a second, but I was looking at the game. He sighed, fakery exasperated, and I cracked a smile.
As predicted, the blue team won. I paid a great deal of attention when the clock hit 10 seconds left. Everybody started rapidly throwing the spheres as much as they can, but none connected. One member of the blue team was actually stupid, though, because he misstepped and touched a ball, falling down as he charred. When the time ran out, all of the balls were turned off and could not be used anymore. Honestly, if I didn't survive the game, I'd much rather have died via one of the electric balls because the shocks from the belts were designed to be more painful because they were drawn out. The balls gave a quick, powerful shock and you were dead almost instantly. This, on the other hand, should make you drop on the floor spasming, in too much pain to even scream before you die a violent death, all for the sickening laughter of the people who kept this organization running through their riches.
I observed as the blue team celebrated when their belts released and fell off of them. They survived yet another day. As the staff came to collect them, I reached for the remote and turned off the television. Staring at the blank screen, I took a gulp of my drink, feeling a strange but pleasant buzzing in my head. I felt fuzzy but so light and free as though I was dazed but walking on the softest cloud. I enjoyed it for a few moments before turning to the man next to me who seemingly grew more handsome. My mouth almost hung open as I admired how beautiful he was. Jesus Christ, he was hot. I just wanted him to- Ahem. Not yet.
I didn't notice him looking at me now, I just stared at him. He looked confused, and I realized why, but I just moved my gaze to his eyes. They were such a beautiful shade of deep brown.
"Dark chocolate eyes..." I whispered.
I think he was questioning my sanity at this point in the night, and he just stood up, looking to refill his glass with alcohol.
"Are you already going to bed?" I wondered.
In-Ho shook his head, and I watched his movements.
"I'm tired, but I don't want to go to bed just yet," I groaned. "Do the VIP's have to come tomorrow night?"
"Yes."
I rolled my eyes, not wanting to have to deal with them. They were always so disgusting and pretentious. If they were civilized, this would be a whole different story.
"Well I guess I'm going to bed."
He looked at me recalling that I had just said I didn't want to.
"Well I need rest if I'm going to deal with those assholes."
In-Ho grinned as if he was being secretive, taking a sip of his whiskey, and I walked to my room wondering what he could be hiding.
