All the residents were sat in the locker room ready to begin our shifts. Chief Webber was stood waiting.
"I have great faith in you ... great faith. I can because I chose you, I trained you. I've watched you work. I know what you can do. That's why today is different. The training wheels are coming off, people," Chief Webber said. All fourth year residents were handed navy scrubs.
"Navy scrubs?" Meredith asked.
"Attending scrubs," Chief Webber corrected. "You are attendings today. Run the cases, take point, but don't be a fool. If you get in over your head, cry uncle. Until then ... Congratulations. You've just been promoted," Chief Webber said before walking out. I got changed and left.
Timeskip
I was assigned to Cardio with April and Cristina. We were meeting the patient with Teddy supervising.
"Roy Henley, 57, was admitted 2 days ago with severe wheezing from pulmonary hypertension, Which basically means..." April was cut off by Mr Henley.
"I can't breathe for crap," Mr Henley said.
"We're gonna run some tests. That should help us decide how to proceed," April said.
"You can run all the tests you want, But what I need's new lungs. My doctor said I was gonna need 'em one day, But I was too healthy for it. I bet I'm not too healthy now," Mr Henley began coughing.
"Dr. Yang?" Teddy asked.
"We'll run some tests," Cristina said.
"Mr. Henley, you listed your daughter as your emergency contact. Is she here with you today?" I asked.
"Oh, no. She lives over in aberdeen. I don't want to trouble her," Mr Henley said.
"Is there anyone here with you?" April asked.
"I'm a tough old dog. I don't need a chaperone," Mr Henley said.
"Sir, your ... your condition is serious. It might be time to trouble your daughter," April said. We left the room.
"Do we think he's a transplant candidate?" April asked.
"Do we?" Teddy asked.
"I'd like to perform some tests first," I said. "So that an informed decision can be made,"
"Well, at this point, I don't think there's anything else we can do, right?" April asked.
"Dr. Yang, do you agree?" Teddy asked.
"I don't know," Cristina asked.
"You don't know if you agree?" Teddy asked.
"He'd have to be approved by the transplant team before going on the waiting list. Do we convene a panel?" April asked.
"Yang, do we?" Teddy asked.
"I couldn't say," Cristina said.
"He's running out of time. I say we convene the panel for today," April said.
"Okay, convene the panel, and then what?" Teddy asked.
"I get some interns to order Mr. Henley's tests," April said.
"He doesn't step foot inside that OR until we do all the tests and know there's no other solution," I said.
"He doesn't have time," April said.
"If I am going to put this man through the pain of a lung transplant I am going to make damn sure there's no other way," I said. "I'm not stopping you from convening the panel," I said.
