Armyn followed Mikasa up the hill carrying wood to get his brother from the tree. He panted and huffed, complaining about the climb up. When they got to the top, they found Eren asleep.
"Eren, Eren wake up." Mikasa shook him. He finally opened his eyes with a gasp, like he'd woken up from a nightmare.
"Huh? Mikasa? Armyn?" He stared at them for a moment. "Where are we... when did you guys change your hair?"
"What?" Armyn frowned. "I'm not sure what you mean."
He paused for a moment. "... nothing. It felt like my dream went on forever..."
"We should get back." Mikasa stood up, carrying the wood on her back. "We don't want to keep your mother waiting."
"... yeah..." Eren looked up at the tree for a moment before he got up, and they started walking back down the hill.

They walked through the city to get back to Zhiganshina, and Eren asked them to not tell anyone he was crying. He cried all the time, he just didn't like to admit it. Armyn was the only one that really saw that side of him, though.
"You really don't remember why? Maybe your dad should check it out," Mikasa suggested.
"Oh wow, you're right! I forgot that tearing up a little is signs for smallpox," Eren scoffed. "It's not a big deal. Just drop it, please?"
Armyn was kicking a rock as they walked, not really paying attention. He heard his brother say "oh, it's you" so he looked up to see a soldier standing in their way. It was Hannes, and behind him his group was laughing and drinking. Armyn grimaced at the smell of alcohol.
"Hey, kids! Is Eren bothering you, Mikasa?" Hannes teased, his face red.
"What do you think you're doing, drinking on the job?" Eren scowled. He had a knack for picking fights. it never surprised Armyn or Mikasa anymore.
"Well, we've been on watch all day! Just a little thirsty. What about you, you want some?"
"I... don't think we can." Mikasa frowned.
"So you're just sitting around like this is some hang out?" Eren's voice raised a little. "What happens if they get in, huh? And you're too drunk to fight and protect us?" He started shouting more, and people passing by could hear. "We're sitting ducks on your watch!"
Hannes flinched and glanced around, raising his hands to quiet Eren down.
"Can we just go please? I'm hungry, and I was hoping to see Armin after lunch..." Armyn groaned. "Just leave them alone."
"What? No, we can't just let them get away with this! If we're in danger what will they do?"
Hannes sighed, but he smiled. "Maybe you're right, but those walls are 50 meters high. No titan is that tall—all they've done for the last hundred years is scratch at it." He rubbed his neck, looking back at his group. "The way I see it... it's a good sign that we have the mindset to sit around like this. Means we're safe."
That only made Eren angrier. "Means we're... safe? How can we be safe when people like you are the ones supposedly protecting us?" He shouted at him. "It's like you don't even care about what you do, my dad says you need to be careful and respect your work!"
The others laughed. "You're right, Hannes, kid does have a mouth on him!"
Hannes laughed too. "Ah, Doctor Jaeger. Can't help but respect the man who saved us from the plague..." he rubbed his neck, "the difference is what he does is way more important. You have to understand, the titans are dumb. They just roam mindlessly. Dead eyed." He looked up like he was picturing them now.
"So, you don't think they're that dangerous?" Armyn asked. "Even with how big they are? Their regeneration?"
Before he could even respond, Eren was shouting again. "How could you think like that? They're monsters! How can you call yourself a garrison if this is how you act? It's misleading!"
Armyn was scared Hannes would get mad, but he only laughed. "That's true. Think about what I said earlier, Though. I'm trained, and I promise you I take my job seriously. If I'm not worried, neither should you be." Armyn supposed that made sense. Eren didn't seem to agree.
"All we do is eat, sleep, eat some more, sleep again. It's not right... and you act like it's all fun and games. You act like we're free." He clenched his fists.
The others continued to laugh. "Kid's dramatic, I say. Come back to the game, Hannes!"
Mikasa and Armyn had to drag Eren away protesting. "Why do you always do this?" Armyn groaned. "He had a point. If the adults aren't worried, we don't have a reason to be." He paused. "But... I do agree with you, that it feels like we're stuck. I dunno. It's a weird feeling..."
Eren nodded, stepping in front of them and turning around to face them. "They're just sitting around like pigs, how can we expect them to protect us?" He put his hands on his hips. "I'm going to join the scouts someday. I don't want to be stuck in these walls, I want to go out there and fight! I don't want to be unable to do anything but feel sorry for myself!"
Mikasa sighed, like she was holding her tongue.
Armyn looked at Mikasa then at Eren. "I want to be a scout too, then. I don't want to be alone—and I want to see the sea, like we saw in Armin's book!"
Eren nodded firmly. "Me and Armyn will become scouts and fight for our freedom! Do you want to be caged animals forever? We can't live like that!" He spoke like he was giving them an inspirational speech.
"I really think you both should give up on it," Mikasa shook her head. "I don't think it's a good idea."
"What? Seriously, Mikasa?" Eren huffed. "Why does everyone treat the scouts like they're one big joke?"
"Yeah, I think what they do is great. Isn't it important to go out and learn more about them if we want to be rid of them?" Armyn stared at the ground. "I mean, we can't just not do anything and expect things to be different, right?"
"I don't think people's opinions on them is really the issue here."
