Armin had passed out from the shock. Armyn held him in his arms, staring blankly out from where he sat on the rooftop. He couldn't move. He could barely even breathe. This didn't feel real. It couldn't be real.
"Eren, is that you?!" A voice shouted behind him. He gasped and looked up.
"Where? Where is he? He's okay?" He looked around to see Connie staring at him. He looked confused.
"Uh... who?" He looked down, finally noticing Armin. "Holy shit, what happened?" He slid down the roof to check on them. "Is he alright? Where's your brother, the rest of your squad?" Armyn stared up at Connie for a long while, before he began crying. Connie groaned and pulled Armin away from him to shake him awake. "Hey, hey! Armin, wake up!"
After shaking him a little bit, Connie managed to wake Armin up. "Con... Connie?"
"There, great! What the hell happened to you? Where's your squad?" He paused, grimacing and wiping his hand on his shirt. "Why are you so slimy?"
"Slimy...?" Armin looked down at himself. "The... the squad—Eren!" He shouted suddenly.
"Yeah, what's up with Eren? He just started... crying."
Armin looked to his right at Armyn, who hadn't stopped sobbing. Tears started to roll down Armin's face too before he screamed, holding his head. "I HATE YOU! WHY CAN'T YOU JUST DIE? WHY IS IT ALWAYS YOU?"
Connie jumped, frowning. "Jeez, man, sorry... you have to get it together, can you remember what happened to everyone else?"
"Forget it, Connie." A girl spoke behind him. If Armyn remembered correctly, her name was Ymir. "Can't you tell? They're dead."
"What? You can't just assume that. They have to be alive, there's no way! And—if one Jaeger is here the other's somewhere nearby."
"Be my guest to cut open their stomachs and look for them." She looked back at him. "Be real with yourself. It really figures that Armin and a Jaeger is all we have left—and knowing the luck we're having, he's probably not even Eren."
Connie looked from Armin and Armyn and back to Ymir. "God, you're such a bitch. You have no right to talk about my friends like that!" He rolled up his sleeves, taking a step forward.
"Wait, wait you two!" Christa, the blonde girl that always hung with Ymir stepped between them and put her arms out. "We don't need to fight. Just think and calm down, please!"
Ymir smiled suddenly and wrapped an arm around her. "That's my girl, keeping the peace! We seriously need to get married after this."
Connie scoffed and rolled his eyes, turning back to his friends. Armyn had stopped crying by now. "Are you guys okay?" He asked, kneeling down.
"No." Armyn finally spoke. He wiped his eyes. "Everything's gone to hell. The whole squad is gone. My brother..." he covered his mouth. He shoved Connie out of the way and bent over the edge of the roof to throw up.
"No way..." Connie's eyes widened. "That's impossible. There's no way!" He stood up again. Armin stood up too.
"We need... to keep going." He looked down at Armyn. "We can meet up with the rear guard, find Mikasa, and we'll move on from there." He took Armyn's hand and helped him up, before using his ODM gear and flying off. Armyn followed him.
"Wait, guys!" He yelled, but he didn't follow."You know what's weird?" Armyn laughed a little as they moved. "It doesn't feel like he's gone."
"... It's weird for me too." Armin grit his teeth.
"No, I mean... we could always tell when something was wrong with each other. When we were hurt. Like his arm and leg..." he stopped. "I can feel that. It's like a fluttery queasy feeling, or like my heart is being squeezed. I can tell he's hurt, but it's like he's still there." The thought of Eren being alive while being "digested" by a titan made Armyn's stomach twist. Armyn hadn't realized Armin was crying until he had crashed into a wall. "Armin!" He stopped to land next to him. "I'm... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have—"
"No, no. It's not your fault, don't do that." Armin grabbed his hand to pull himself up. "I'm just having a hard time processing everything, I can't even begin to think about Eren..." he held his head. "I'm realizing we were wrong, about the world becoming hell. It's been hell, we didn't notice it." He clenched his fists. "All I ever wanted was to be strong with you, Eren and Mikasa, but you were always strong for me. And now... because he was trying to protect me, Eren is..." his shoulders shook and he held his face in his hands.
Armyn frowned and rubbed his back. "No, Armin—you can't do that to yourself. It's not your fault at all, it could never be your fault."
"Oh, hey, look!" Armyn looked up at the sound of a voice, seeing Percy and Marco. "It's you! Oh, thank fuck." Percy sighed in relief. He was limping, and Marco was helping him walk.
"Percy?" Armyn stood up straight. "What happened to you?"
"An accident with the blades." Percy sighed. "I should be fine when we find Jean. He was supposed to bring supplies to our squad from the armory, and there was supposed to be some basic first-aid stuff in there, but he never came back. We were trying to find him, and got separated from the rest of our squad."
Armin frowned a little. After everything he's seen, Armyn was sure he was thinking the worst. "Why don't you stick with us? We... lost our squadron too." His tone made the implication clear. "I couldn't live with myself if we left you."
Marco looked at Percy then back at them. "I think that's for the best. Percy also ran out of gas, they said they grabbed the wrong canister in all the panic."
Armyn nodded. "We were headed to see what was up with the rear guard, and why this evacuation is taking so long. If we can get it to move along, we can get you some first-aid."
"What about Jean?" Percy looked up at Marco. "What if he's looking for us too?"
"Then he'll find you when we regroup after the city has been evacuated." Armin responded for him. "It's too dangerous for you to be wandering on the ground alone like this."
Percy sighed. "Yeah... okay, you're right. Let's go."
Unfortunately for Armin's nerves, Percy's lack of gas forced them to walk on the ground. He said it made him feel better knowing that at least Marco was fine, since he'd made it in the top ten. Armyn wasn't so sure that would be enough, but if they could find Mikasa, he was sure they'd be okay.1136 words in chapter
