Pink hues darted across your eyes. "Give me a hug," you commanded, and without wasting a beat, Mei's arms came wrapping around you. You were no stranger to the hazy look that had replaced her eager, upbeat expression. Your powers had definitely affected her just then.

You cancelled your Quirk, and Mei snapped back to her senses.

"Wow," she hummed. "That feels weird! I wonder why it worked then, but not earlier. Maybe there really is a limit to how far your voice can travel?"

"But you said you could still hear my commands."

"Yeah, that's true. Weird..."

"Can you go back to where you were before, and I'll try just yelling the words out this time? Maybe it'll have a different effect."

"Sure, let's give it a try!"

This time, she didn't run quite as far, so that she would still be able to hear you clearly enough. You glanced down at the megaphone resting snugly between your fingers.

Hm.

"Mei-chan, sit down on the ground and curl up into a ball!"

You had to yell to get the message across, but surely enough, she reacted this time. You were beginning to understand. It seemed as though it needed to be your voice, and not the makings of a device which amplified the volume and converted its signal.

"Do you think it's hopeless?" you asked the girl. "If it only works when it's my natural voice, unaltered, then I'm not sure how I can rely on devices to increase the output."

Mei grabbed the megaphone and rotated it between her hands. "I'm not sure," she admitted. "It might have to do with a particular frequency at which your voice retains its effectiveness. As in, there may be a certain threshold, and once it's passed, your Quirk won't work any more. As a designer, it's my job to look into it, so don't worry! I'll see if I can come up with any other devices and we can test those out as well. I'll just need a bit of time."

"Okay," you smiled. "Thanks again. I really appreciate you going to all this trouble for me."

"It's my pleasure! Practice makes perfect! This is an opportunity to further hone my skills as an inventor. Before long, I'll have a bunch of cute babies for you to choose from and try out!"

You giggled. "It's cute how you refer to your inventions as your babies."

"Well, they are," she insisted. "After all, they're my own creations! My sweat and tears!"

"Ha-ha. When you put it that way, I guess I can't argue."

Though this little session of yours had ultimately ended inconclusively, you'd still learned something new about your powers. Your voice likely couldn't be altered without limits. The source-you-was the determining factor for its effectiveness.

You headed back to the dorms, eagerly anticipating Mei's newest invention.
