"You guys ready?"
Connie looked up at her husband and chewed her lip nervously. "I'm not sure."
His eyes were intense, so intense looking down from in front of her.
They'd taken the other mics, put them in the corner and turned Steven and Connie's so they were facing each other. It was wildly intimate and it needed to be. Their friends were on the other side of the glass but for the short time they'd be singing to and with each other, they'd be alone in this.
They both knew the chorus and tag lines, they'd had the opportunity to record backing vocals with unofficial performances where they weren't paying as much attention. But the pressure was on now, it was nearly smothering with this supposedly being the version they'd release publicly.
Steven's hand reached out to brush against her cheek as he gave an encouraging smile. "I love you."
"I love you, too. You sure your verse fits?" She asked, looking down at her sheet.
He shrugged. "I have drafts. It'll piece itself together based off of yours."
Her jaw dropped in disbelief. "You didn't write a verse?!"
"Do you trust me?" He signaled a thumbs up as the music started playing. "I need you to trust me."
Ever since the girls had recorded Issues, they'd been indulging themselves with more in depth and personal versions of it. Each group wrote a song, and the song would reference a part of them that was not perfect by any means but something they knew to be truth or worse, their guilty pleasure.
Steven and Connie had struggled for a moment to find their fatal flaw of their relationship, but it eventually boiled down to a half asleep conversation about a dream of hers he'd accidentally dream walked to.
The more serious the conversation got, the more awake and aware they became.
And that's where they'd found it. Or at least one of them.
Truly, they were lucky they were single when they'd reunited because it would not take a lot for them to cheat with each other. They both hated breaking hearts, and often hesitated to do so. It was absolutely shameful, but no one made them feel like how they felt together. And even if they couldn't work out, they'd still try behind everyone's backs.
Fuck the entire world when they had each other in their arms.
Connie blew out a short breath and tried to force herself to look into his eyes. "I got a man, but I want you
I got a man, but I want you," She couldn't keep it, not with his eyes telling her the depths of terrible things he'd do just to have her. "And it's just nerves, it's just dick
Makin' me think 'bout someone new," She glanced to the side in guilt. Would it have been that reason, or was she lying to herself?
"You know I got so much to say
I try to hide it in my face
And it don't work, you see through
That I just want get wit' you
And you're right–," She tried to let the music take her even as her heart battered against her chest. She wasn't a poet like Anna or a wordsmith like Adam and she certainly wasn't a romantic like Steven. Part of her was afraid she would disappoint him. "You right, I got my guy
But I, I, can't help it, I want you." She wouldn't have even tried to help it, that was the worst part. She'd give in with little to no resistance to Steven. Anytime he wanted, he would have her. "Said, you right,
I, got my guy
But I, I, can't help it, I want you.I can't stop and look the other way
'Cause I know what could be, babe
And you'd never feel the same
You'd be thinkin' 'bout it every day
Don't believe in fairytales, but we got our fantasies." Like a black hole his gaze finally captured her and held on for dear life and she was lost in them. An involuntary blush made the edges of her vision blurry for a moment when he licked his lips as he intently listened to everything she was telling him about their hypothetical Known Affair.
"And it's me and you, no she
Tryna be all through your sheets
Have you all on top of me
Acting like it's not that deep
Boy, you can take it out on me
Tell me what it's 'bout to be
Really feel it's bound to be
I can't tell no one but they all know."
