Staying Accountable

Ok, this is the problem that I see with most wattpaders. Especially me, I won't lie. I'll find a really good book and go,"When are they gonna update again?" Months later, I see that book in my library and when I check to see if it has an update, I am extremely disappointed that it doesn't and just delete the book.

Ways to prevent this are easy to say but not quite simple to do. But anyways, here they are.

[1] Give Yourself Weekly Deadlines
It's kind of what I said earlier, you need to have a deadline. You need something to aim for, whether it be a word count, or chapters, or a percentage of progress, whatever. If you do this, it would be best to have someone accountable to make sure you're reaching your goal and cheering you on when you're not in the mood.

[2] Get Early Feedback
Ok, listen up, people. I am not saying ask for comments, ok? I am saying ask a friend, a parent, a sibling, a grandparent, or anyone you trust to read through your story. Nothing makes a writer more mad than writing a book and then having to rewrite it because you didn't get enough feedback. But at the same time, remember that this is your book. If they say something along the lines of,"This book is really stupid, you're an idiot," don't listen to them, ok? This is your book that you're writing for your enjoyment. Not necessarily to please the people around you, although in a few cases that is acceptable. Just listen to what you think is right and trust your instinct.

[3] Make it a Habit
If you make writing a habit you'll have nothing to worry about. The easiest way to do this would be to have a set time every day or every other day that is for writing. Making it a habit will also have the effect that you'll get more reads, I've noticed the more chapters you have, the more willing readers are to choose your book.

[4] Don't Stop Writing at the End of the Chapter
This is the thing I see the most with my friends and I. We'll write a chapter, finish it, publish it, and never want to write another word. That is the absolutely worst thing you can do, and that's because when you decide to start writing again, you're staring at a blank page. Even if it's late at night and you're sleep deprived after just finishing the chapter, all you have to do is at least write one measly paragraph. This also can help with writer's block because you'll know where your story is headed.
