Driving the Volvo was a much different experience than driving my truck. I'd need to blackmail Edward to let me drive his car more often.
I barreled down the wet highway, turning the windshield wipers on high. The engine was humming soundly. Fifty-five was the most I could coax out of my truck, but with the Volvo I could go beyond that and it would still be completely smooth.
I had no clue where the boundary line was, but I began to feel safer as I passed the first houses outside La Push. This must be beyond where Alice was allowed to follow.
I eventually came to a stop in front of the familiar faded red house. The lump came back to my throat as I stared at the little place that had once been my refuge. It had been so long since I'd been here.
Before I could cut the engine, Jacob was standing in the door, his face blank with shock.
In the sudden silence when the engine died, I could practically hear him grit his teeth.
"Hi, Jake," I said, gaze hard.
"Y/n."
"We need to talk."
Jacob scowled, but he nodded. "Come inside. Billy's out of the house—one of the guys took him for a push on the beach."
I followed Jacob inside. As he pulled out a couple glasses, his nose scrunched. "You reek of vampire."
"I drove their car." I watched as Jacob poured water from a pitcher into the two cups. "It's gorgeous. I think you should give it a spin. Make it reek of werewolf before I give it back."
I couldn't be sure, but I thought I saw a tiny hint of a smile flicker across his lips.
"People are betting on a fight between you and Edward, you know," I said. "You—"
"Why are you here, Y/n?" Jacob set my glass in front of me and then leaned back against the counter behind him.
"Because you've been ignoring me," I said, narrowing my eyes. "And I want to know why the hell you're so willing to suddenly be buddy buddy with Bella but not me."
Jacob raised his eyebrows incredulously. "Oh, so you think I should suddenly welcome you back with open arms after what you did?"
I sighed. "Listen. The only reason I went to Italy was because Bella would have gone without me anyways and I needed to protect her."
Jacob frowned. "Italy? Who said anything about Italy?"
I paused. "I...what?"
"Why does Italy matter?"
"Because I'm assuming that's why you're so pissed at me?"
"I'm not pissed off because of that." Jacob hesitated. "Well. Maybe a little. But that's not the main reason."
My brow knit. "So what did I do?"
"You're just standing by and letting Edward break the treaty!"
"What? How do you know about that?" The treaty between werewolves and vampires would be broken once a human is bitten. But how did Jacob know that that was going to happen to me? I hadn't told anyone outside of the Cullen family. Did Edward tell Jacob what happened in Italy?
Jacob frowned. "Um, it's pretty obvious. Anyone with a skull can see how much that leech is obsessed with Bella."
I blinked, confused. "What?"
"What do you mean, 'what?' Everyone knows he's going to bite her."
"What? I'm getting bitten."
