As I drove home, I wasn't paying much attention to the road that shimmered wetly in the sun. I was thinking about the flood of information Jacob had shared with me, trying to sort it out, to force it all to make sense. Despite the overload, I felt lighter. Seeing Jacob smile, having all the secrets thrashed out . . . it didn't make things perfect, but it made them better. I was right to have gone. Jacob needed me. And obviously, I thought as I squinted into the glare, there was no danger.

It came out of nowhere. One minute there was nothing but bright highway in my rearview mirror. The next minute, the sun was glinting off my truck that was right on my tail.

"What does he want now?" I muttered, spotting Edward in the driver's seat.

The truck followed inches behind me. I kept my eyes on the road ahead, but after a few more minutes of avoiding it, I sighed and pulled over to the side of the road. My truck soon followed.

I shut off the engine and got out. "You know I was about to drive to your place to give you your keys back," I called as I approached Edward, who was getting out of the driver's door.

His nose scrunched. "Ugh—you smell like wet dog."

"Your car does too." I tossed him the keys and he snatched them out of the air. "Sorry."

"Wow, an apology coming from you? I can die peacefully now—I've seen everything."

"Aww. If I'd have known it'd cause you to drop dead I would have made it sincere." We stopped as we met in the middle of both of our cars.

"Please tell me the Volvo doesn't actually smell like you do right now."

"Yep. Even the trunk does."

"How did you even—?" He sighed and shook his head. "You know what, I don't even want to know." He took the keys to the truck out of his pocket and handed them to me. "Emmett, Carlisle, Jasper and I are leaving to feed for a couple days, by the way."

"And this concerns me because...?"

"Alice is having you and Bella over for a slumber party."

"A 'slumber' party?" I asked skeptically. "Or a 'Alice is babysitting Bella and Y/n so they don't go to La Push' party?"

"What do you think?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Esme already cleared it with Charlie," Edward went on. "You're staying with the girls for two nights, Friday and Saturday."

I frowned. "'The girls'?" I quoted. "So...Rosalie is going to be there, too?"

"Yeah. Sorry."

"You're not sorry even a little bit."

"No, I'm not. Unless it will make you drop dead. Then I'll give you an extra sincere apology."

"You stole that joke from me. Not funny."

"It's a little funny."

I gave a scoff that was most definitely not a laugh—there was a difference—and folded my arms. "So how much did you pay Alice off for this?"

"I'm insulted that you think I would resort to bribery."

I raised an eyebrow. He held my gaze.

Then he sighed. "I gave her a Porsche."

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah. There weren't any Lamborghinis available in the color she wanted."

I blinked, wide eyed. "Well...I mean I guess you can afford stuff like this when your bank accounts have been collecting interest for centuries."
