The rest of the evening was slightly awkward when a drunk Belly tripped and bumped into Susannah who was holding a cake. They fell to the floor, as did the cake, which resulted in Susannah's injured wrist, and her grandmother's cake stand shattered across the floor.
All that was left was to watch Jeremiah's firework display. I sat on the grass with my family as we watched the dark sky become illuminated by the bursting colours and patterns. It felt magical.
After a while, Kai was asleep, so Dad said, "I think it's time for bed."
"Definitely," agreed Mum. Dad carefully lifted Kai into his arms so that he didn't wake up his son, and Mum helped a drowsy Josie stand up. She looked at me and asked, "Are you coming up, sweetie?"
I shook my head, saying, "Nah. I'm going to stay up a little longer."
"Okay," she said, kissing my head.
Dad copied her actions and said, "Don't stay up too late. We've got a whole weekend of fun to have together."
"I promise, I won't. Good night," I said with a smile and a wave.
I took a quick bathroom break before resuming my gaze upon the sky, but as I opened the door, I saw Jeremiah's eyes locked onto something. I was about to ask him if he was alright, but my eyes caught the scene ahead. It was Belly and Conrad in what seemed to be a conversation. It didn't seem unusual.
But then Conrad leant in to kiss Belly, and Belly reciprocated the action. I was frozen in my spot, as if someone had casted a spell on me to keep watching until they kissed. But the kiss never came. The moment was interrupted by a firework going off quite close to them, a firework that Jeremiah purposely released.
It was in that moment did I feel my heart crack, because just a few hours ago, I was the girl that Conrad was about to kiss, and now, he made the same move to our close friend. The heart that once had so much love for Conrad, now had a weak point.
But I had no right to complain, right? I had Callum. I was kissing Callum. I asked Callum to be my escort to the ball. I had Callum's flowers in my room. Whatever Conrad wanted to do with other girls should not have an affect on me anymore. So why did it?
Answer, because I never liked Conrad. I was in love, and now, I got burned for playing with fire.
The realisation made me tear up, but I refused to let a drop escape. It was at that point did Jeremiah notice my presence. At first, he was like a deer caught in headlights, thinking I was about to scold him for his actions, but he noticed my focus was not on him, but on the sight behind him. "Abby," he said, releasing me from my frozen spell. "You okay?"
I nodded and blinked away the tears. "Yeah... Yeah, I, um, I was going to watch the rest of the fireworks but... uh..." My eyes shifted back to Conrad and Belly. "I think I've seen enough."
