"Ada!!" Mrs. Claudia yelled.
"Yes?" Ada replied, raising her voice.
"Come downstairs, dinner is ready," Mrs. Claudia responded.
"Okay," Ada said, rushing downstairs.
"Goodness, I'm so hungry, I need food," Ada thought to herself.
As the food was arranged, Ada's mouth began watering at the sight of the delicious dishes.
"Eat, Ada," Mrs. Claudia said, giving her a strange, fake smile.
Ada awkwardly smiled back and started eating the delightful meal.
Mrs. Claudia had lost her husband years ago and now lived alone. Her children were all married and had their own lives. However, she had several maids, and now Ada was living with her, so she wasn't completely alone. After finishing the delicious meal, Ada took all the plates to the kitchen and washed them, despite the disapproval of the other maid. She thanked Mrs. Claudia and went straight to her room to rest for the night.
Ada was peacefully sleeping when she suddenly felt something fall on her body. She slowly woke up to see a pile of clothes, numerous clothes, on top of her.
She looked up and saw Mrs. Claudia smiling wickedly, creating a chilling image.
"Mrs. Claudia, why did you drop all these clothes on me? What are they for?" Ada asked.
"Well, you are going to wash all these clothes, Ada," Mrs. Claudia replied.
"What?" Ada whispered in disbelief.
"You heard me, don't pretend to be deaf or something," Mrs. Claudia responded.
"But why? You have many maids, let one of them do it," Ada questioned.
Mrs. Claudia instantly became angry. "How dare you come to my house, eat my food, sleep in my bed, and then have the audacity to tell me what to do? You dare to disobey me? You are living in my house, Ada, so of course you have to work."
"I'm not your family member, so you have to do a lot of work to stay in my house and eat my food?"
"Am I understood?" Mrs. Claudia shouted, making Ada flinch in fear.
"Yes, I understand,"
Good. Now, "Get to it, pronto! Wash those clothes, sweep and mop the entire house, then you can fix yourself some breakfast. The maids are mine, not yours. Understood?" she commanded firmly.
"Okay," Ada replied, on the brink of tears.
"Now, get out of my sight, you filthy wretch!" she bellowed.
Quickly, Ada gathered the clothes and hurried out of the room to wash them.
"Is this how I'm going to live in this house? She seems so cruel and heartless. She definitely despises me and plans to make me suffer. What have I done to deserve this? First my dad, now this. Who have I wronged? I haven't wronged anyone. Why me, God?" Ada said, tears streaming down her face.
One month later...
Stepping out of the taxi, Ada gazed ahead at the school building.
As she walked towards the entrance, she observed the vast number of students bustling around.
"Wow, this school has a lot of students, cool!" she remarked.
Guided by some helpful students as she made her way to her lecture hall, she noticed that classes had already begun. Unfazed, she knew she would be late due to starting a job at a Spanish restaurant two weeks ago, and Mrs. Claudia had her doing numerous household chores. This prevented Ada from waking up early and coming to school early as well.
She had originally planned to find a job after settling in New York, but Mrs. Claudia's demands led her to reassess. Saving up money to escape that witch house was now her primary goal.
"Witch?" she thought to herself, "That's her new name from now on."
Suddenly, a tall, lanky British man with black hair cleares his throat.
"Erm, miss are you lost or something?", the inquired.
Then I realized that I have been standing by the door this whole time.
Gosh, this is really embarrassing.
You could tell that the man is British from his accent.
"Are you a new student?" he inquired.
"Yes," she replied.
"Can you introduce yourself to the class?" he requested.
Nodding, Ada walked to the front and spoke, "My name is Achebe Cassandra Adaeze. I'm from Nigeria, and it's a pleasure to be here and meet you all," she said, glancing at their expressionless faces.
"Nice to meet you, Adaeze," the British man, whom she assumed was a lecturer, responded. "You can call me Ada," she said with a small smile.
"Have a seat. I'm Professor Andrew Collins, but you can call me Prof Andrew," he directed.
"Okay," she replied, taking a seat next to a fat male student.
As she settled down, she let out a sigh of relief, realizing how exhausted she was from the intense workload of the past month.
