"Hey! HEY! Get out of here!" I woke with a start, hearing Thomas's voice echo from somewhere on my left. Sitting up and trying to blink the sleep out of my eyes, I was greeted by the sight of the boy trying to shoo a crow away from one of our backpacks. I couldn't help but stare incredulously at the scene in front of me. What in the world was happening?
Thomas moved to wake Teresa up once he had successfully got the bird to fly away - Minho had woken up with his shouts and was shaking Aris up. I turned to my right to see the blonde boy still sleeping peacefully, curled on his side. Standing up, I braced myself against some of the debris as dizziness took over my head for a second, before walking over to him.
"Newt, hey, we've gotta go now." I whispered, gently shaking his shoulder. Soon, the whole group was up and ready to start moving again, after Thomas made sure that the zombies had indeed left us alone. I couldn't look at Winston too long, the boy was obviously in extreme amounts of pain, and my anxiety spiked each time I heard him groan out in agony as Frypan helped him stand up.
I gasped as we walked out of out shelter, staring at the hundreds of broken down cars that littered what I could only guess must once have been roads. Chunks of buildings had been torn out, leaving metal rods sticking out in strange angles. I couldn't help imagine what this area used to look like - no doubt once being beautiful.
We started down one of the paths before I had much more time to ponder, the group staying in a somber sort of silence, only broken by Winston's occasional sharp breaths.
"Hang on, stop." Thomas suddenly said, the rest of us turning around to see he had fallen behind the group - now coming to a full halt. "Do you guys hear that?"
A few seconds later - the unmistakable sound of some sort of aircraft filled the air. "Get down! Everybody HIDE." I was grabbed before I could even move, being pulled under another bit of fallen building by someone. We crouched there, breathing heavily as the sounds of blades in the sky overhead us slowly subsided. We slowly peeked out, to see two helicopters and one of the Burg-things we were brought to the facility in flying away from us.
The aircrafts were definitely searching for something, based on the way they curved around the destroyed buildings, staying as low as they could be. Whether that was us, or something else, I had no idea. But I hoped it was the latter.
"They're never gonna stop looking for us, are they?" Aris asked, confirming my fears. No one replied, not having an answer - instead, Thomas simply stood up, starting back down the path we had been taking, the rest of us following.
"Everyone good?" Thomas asked a few seconds later, earning a few scattered replies. Winston was struggling to clime up the junk piled sand dune, panting heavily as he clung tightly to something sticking out of the sand. I turned back down, ignoring the splitting headache that had just started as I held out a hand, helping him to the top.
The rubble slowly started thinning as we climbed another sand dune, turning back into pure sand that had us all squinting as it flew annoyingly into our eyes. I sighed, pressing the palms of my hands into my eyes, trying desperately to relieve the only worsening pain in my head. The sharp pangs only making me feel even more nauseous than I already was.
"Hey, you alright?" Newt asked from next to me, noticing the look of discomfort painted on my face. I knew didn't need to share my woes with others, they already had enough problems - so I simply nodded, giving the blonde a small smile. Before he could say anything else, though, we had reached the top of the dune, and Thomas lifted a hand to his eyes, trying to look ahead.
