HOW TO BE LOVED

14 – Another Chance

Freen's POV

It was a typically busy afternoon when I decided to stop by Becky's office to invite her to Mind's birthday celebration over the weekend. I knocked lightly and pushed the door open just enough to peek inside. "Becky, it's Freen," I called out, hoping not to catch her at a bad time.

What I saw stopped me dead in my tracks. Becky was seated, and in her lap was Friend, cradling Becky's face with a tenderness that made the air around them shimmer. I heard Friend's voice, soft and pleading, "I beg you, Becky."

My eyes widened in shock, and a rush of confusion and embarrassment flooded over me. Instinctively, I started to back away, muttering, "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt." My heart pounded as I made a quick turn, feeling like I had stumbled into something deeply personal.

I must have startled them too, because Becky immediately stood up, looking just as surprised as I felt. But before I could retreat fully, Becky's voice, firm yet gentle, called out, "Don't go, Freen. Friend here was just about to leave."

Friend, sensing the awkwardness, tried to regain composure and offered me a polite nod before stepping away from Becky. As Friend walked past me, I caught a brief, intense glance, almost as if she was trying to gauge my reaction.

Before slipping out of the room, Friend turned back to Becky one last time. "Think about it, Becky, please. I love you, honey."

Hearing Friend's words brought back the memory of seeing her kissing a guy in the elevator the other week. Did Friend come clean to Becky, or was she hiding this? The question lingered in my mind, creating an uneasy knot in my stomach.

I hesitated at the threshold, a mixture of tension and curiosity tugging at me. I looked at Becky, my eyes full of questions I wasn't sure how to ask—or if I should even ask.

Becky gave me a reassuring smile and gestured for me to come in. "Please, come in, Freen," she said, her voice steady despite the tension in the room.

As the door clicked shut behind me, I took a tentative step closer to Becky. "Is everything okay? You looked really... involved," I asked, my voice a mix of concern and curiosity.

"I'm sorry you had to see that," Becky said, a hint of frustration and weariness in her voice. "Friend and I were just having a... complicated conversation."

I stepped toward the chair in front of her desk, still shaken by what I had witnessed. "I didn't mean to intrude," I said, feeling the uncertainty in my own voice.

Becky shook her head, trying to put me at ease. "You didn't intrude. It's just... things are a bit messy right now, but it's nothing you need to worry about."

I nodded slowly, trying to process what I had just seen. "I get it. We all have our complicated stories, I guess."

Becky sighed, running a hand through her hair, looking both weary and relieved. "It's confusing. Friend and I have a long history, and sometimes it spills over into moments like this. Especially when she's begging me to rekindle our relationship. It makes me want to believe her and try again. I actually think... maybe... I want to."

I just nodded, listening, as a whirlwind of thoughts raced through my mind. Should I tell her what I saw in the elevator? What or how should I say it when she seems so inclined to give their relationship another chance? Or maybe her desire to try again is my cue to come clean and help her see things clearly. But I didn't want to influence her decision too much. It's so complicated.

Becky's voice broke through my internal debate. "Anyways, I don't want to bore you with my complicated love life."

"Oh no! You're not boring me," I said quickly, my thoughts snapping back to the present. "I'll always listen if you need me to, I'm your friend, remember."
