I'm going to Seojun's house today. It's been so long since I last visited. What should I wear?
It's a simple enough question, but I find myself standing in front of my wardrobe, staring at the neatly hung clothes as if they hold the answer to all my problems.

I reach for my favorite dress—a soft, sky-blue knee-length dress with delicate buttons down the front. It came with a matching coat, making it look a little fancy but not too much. I had bought it online after saving up my pocket money for months.
I still remember the day it arrived. I had been so happy, twirling around in front of my mirror, admiring the way it fit me just right. But my happiness hadn't lasted long.
The moment Appa saw the package, his face had twisted in anger. "You spent money without asking me?" Before I could explain, his hand struck my cheek. Hard.
I remember how my vision blurred, how my ears rang from the force of it.
"You dare waste money on nonsense?"
That was a long time ago, but the sting of that slap still lingers in my heart. Even now, as I put the dress on, I half-expect his voice to thunder through the house again.
And then, as if on cue—
"Kang Soojin, where are you going?"
I turn around slowly, meeting his cold, piercing gaze.
"I'm going to my friend's house, Appa."
His eyes narrow, scanning me from head to toe. "Which friend? And didn't I tell you not to wear that cheap crap anymore?"
I swallow the anger rising in my throat. "Han Gowoon."
It's not a lie. Gowoon did invite me. But I don't dare say Seojun's name. If I do, I know exactly what will happen.
Appa's lip curls in disgust. "And that dress—"
I grip the sides of my coat. "I bought it with my own money, Appa. You have no right to stop me from wearing it."
The second the words leave my mouth, I regret them.
His hand moves fast, striking my cheek just like before. My head snaps to the side, and a sharp sting spreads across my skin.
I don't react. I don't cry.
I just stand there, numb, waiting for more.
But he simply exhales sharply and mutters, "Useless girl."
I hold my breath as I walk past him, each step heavier than the last.
Once I step outside, I let out a shaky breath. My fingers brush over my cheek, but I quickly pull them away. There's no point thinking about it. I just have to move forward.
