I was alerted awake in the middle of the night by a gunshot. I jumped out of bed, going to make sure my door was locked, until I noticed that the dresser had been moved. Not very much, but slightly. That was weird. I looked at the time, it was 3:52AM. I walked over to my door; it was still locked, but I heard banging on it. I backed away quickly, until I heard Kaz's voice, then I opened the door. She ran in and slammed the door. They were pale as a ghost. I walked over to them.
"Are you alright?" I asked.
"If they're not dead, I'm gonna fuckin' kill 'em," She said, almost hyperventilating.
"Who?" I asked, confused.
She snapped, "Who ever fucking fired that damn gun."
I backed up a little, "Would it help to be in your room? 'Cause of your things, you know?"
She nodded frantically, "Will you come with?"
I nodded, "Yeah, yeah, of course, that's why I asked. We should move quickly, though,"
She nodded and we went out the door. She grabbed onto my hand, their hands were very stiff and calloused; they had "worker hands". There was another gunshot, she squeezed onto my hand and gripped my arm with the other. We reached Kaz's room quickly, as it was just right next to mine. Her door was already unlocked and was ajar. We entered and she slammed the door again as soon as we got in. She ran over to a corner with a pile of stuffed animals. I walked over and sat next to them.
"Are you alright now?" I asked.
They nodded frantically, again, "A bit, yeah," They sighed, "Sorry, I just...don't do well with guns and shit, there was a lot of, like, gun violence and shit where I was at growing up,"
"Where did you grow up exactly?" I asked, I realized I never asked before.
"Texas," They replied, "Not sure exactly what the town was, but I was around Dallas for the most part,"
"Texas. I've never been," I replied, "Did you like it there?"
"Oh, yeah, like, ninety percent of the time I liked it," They stated, she seemed to be calming down.
We talked a bit more for around an hour until they fell asleep on the pile. I didn't want to leave them alone, in case anything happens again, so I curled up next to the pile and got some sleep. I would worry about the gunshots tomorrow.
When I woke up to the alarm, I forgot I was in Kaz's room. I was scared for a few seconds, but then I remembered where I was. Kaz was still asleep on the pile of stuffed animals, so I quietly exited their room and went to investigate. As I walked out of their room, I saw Zenshiro come out of his, with his jacket on again. I waved, he waved back.
"Are you doing alright? Like, better than yesterday?" I asked.
He nodded, but he had this weird look in his eye, "Yeah, yeah, sorry about that last night,"
"You're all good, don't worry about it," I shrugged, "Did you hear those gunshots last night?"
"Oh, yeah, that freaked me out, man," He replied.
"Yeah, me too, and Kaz," I stated.
"Kaz, too? Were they okay?" He asked, worried.
I nodded, "I helped her calm down, I stayed the night with them to make sure she was alright,"
He had a weird look again, then spoke, "I'm glad she was alright,"
"She's still asleep now, though," I added, "I was gonna go check out what the gunshots were, like, see if anything happened,"
