Chapter: 46

ALTAIR:
"Why would I ever put Altair in danger?" Dirk's mind raced, his heart aching at the thought. "How can I allow him to be near Talon when the very essence of a vampire was responsible for my suffering? My own flesh and blood could be torn apart simply because of who Talon is."
He could still see the glint of malice in Floridia's eyes when she had betrayed him, the way she had laughed while he crumbled beneath the weight of her betrayal. It was a memory that clawed at him-a reminder that vampires were not to be trusted. They were creatures of darkness, and in the back of his mind, a fear whispered: What if Talon was just like her? What if he turned on Altair when he least expected it? He had proven his fears right three times.
Dirk's gut twisted painfully as he thought of his son. Altair was all he had left, the light in his life, the very essence of his being. The thought of losing him was unbearable. Dirk had fought too hard to protect him, to keep him safe from the world's cruelty. He could still remember the first time he held Altair in his arms, the feeling of pure love washing over him, overshadowing all the pain he had endured.
"But what if I lose him?" Dirk whispered, more to himself than to his mates. At this point, it seemed he was only thinking out loud, overwhelmed by conflicting emotions that shook his voice. "If I lose Altair, I will be alone. I will have no one to carry on my legacy, no one to share the love I have with my mates. Without him, I am just a broken lion."
The thought of being alone consumed him. He envisioned a future stripped of laughter and joy, devoid of the warmth only a child could bring. The prospect of returning to that kind of solitude was beyond unbearable. He had suffered so much already; the idea of watching his son face the same fate was a nightmare he couldn't fathom.
"Maybe if I keep him away from Talon, I can protect him," Dirk reasoned, desperation creeping into his thoughts. "Maybe it's the only way to ensure he stays safe from the darkness that lurks within vampires."
Tears continued to flow as he grappled with the weight of his memories. He felt trapped in a cycle of fear that spiraled deeper with every passing moment. Talon's presence in their lives was a reminder of the betrayal he had faced, a stark contrast to the love he felt for his son. If Altair's life did not depend on Talon's presence within the Pack, Dirk would ensure that Talon disappeared from their lives completely.
