Addie never liked the hospital, but it was the only one close enough to home that they could afford. It was kind of dingy and the nurses were slightly off. Atleast her father had his own room, the nicest one he could get. The church made sure of it. Or, more specifically Margret. "Only the best for Father Chambers". Is what she said when she learnt the news of Addie's father having to be moved to a care facility. His illness had started to worsen, and Addie could no longer be the only one to help.
She walked through the halls to her father's room, sandals softly echoing off of the linoleum flooring. Lights flickered, and muffled chatter buzzed from multiple places. Addie smiled at passing faces, even if they didn't smile back.
"Daddy!" She exclaimed as she opened the door to her father's room. He was sat up in his bed, a book open in his hands. "I know I'm not supposed to be visiting today but I have to tell you something."
Her father looked up in slight confusion mixed with shock. Normally Addie visited every other Wednesday.
"Adelaide, honey..." He said, closing his book in his lap. "What are you doing here?" She put her bag on the side of his bed, pulling out her notebook.
"I went to the church today, there were having a meeting about the newspaper." She opened the book to her notes. "Figured I could be of some help!"
Her father's face faltered. His eyebrows sunk into a slanted form.
"Adelaide I specifically told you to stay out of it." He said sternly.
"Yes I know." She continued, turning over the notebook to him. "But I thought it would be helpful if I told you what happened. So when you get better you'll be able to go back and help more."
"I'm sorry for going against you. But, if it helps, Father Charles asked me to go. He wants me to work on the paper with Sister Megan." She said with a smile.
He sighed, turning to Addie he handed the notebook back. "I gave you an instruction, you didn't follow it."
She looked down at the book. Tears welling up in her eyes as she sheepishly slid it back into her bag.
