The room inside looked like any other normal bedroom. Two beds. It looked fine. Something that differed from the outside around it. Normal enough for Addie to take a deep breath, fighting the fear that crawled in her bones.
Lois threw her keys on one of the beds and shut the glass door. Addie stepped inside and sat down on the other bed, picking at the skin of her lips.
"Are we safe here?" She asked quietly, it felt embarrassing to ask. But there was a deep anxiety in her stomach that would not go away. The whole situation was worrying.
"Safe? Very. There's only ash raining down and bloody women running around. But sure, we are so safe." Lois said.
Addie felt heat flood her cheeks and regretted asking. She knew Lois was just stressed and needed a break but it still brought out a twinge of embarrassment.
Megan dropped to her knees on the side of the bed. She prayed quietly, speaking so fast that Addie could not understand her words.
Lois picked up one of those complementary mini water bottles and drank it all in one sip. "You drop a contact lens or something?" She said. There was a thick tension that had settled between the two. Megan was blaming Lois for things out of her control, and Lois was sick of it.
"You're welcome to join me. You don't even have to say anything." Megan said, her words strained and on the verge of sounding like she was angry.
"Oh, no. I'd just feel silly."
"So what? Feel silly, I dare you."
"Fuck off! Read the room." Lois said, throwing her hands to her sides. "I'm not gonna hold your hand while you write a letter to Santa."
Addie bit her bottom lip to contain the small smile she felt growing. Although she did believe in prayer, or she did. Whatever she believed anymore. It was still slightly relieving to hear Megan be berated. After all, she was being weird first.
Lois unzipped a duffel bag and pulled out an arrangement of guns. No matter how different Addie had felt as of recent towards a lot of things, the sight still made her inhale sharply.
