Chloè Bennett

Leaving behind the morning tension, I find myself walking a few steps behind Felix, whose longer strides effortlessly pull him ahead.

We're at the local mall, making our way to the Apple Store. I never expected that the day he offered to buy me a new phone would coincide with the day he broke mine.

Since we departed from the house, he hasn't ceased apologizing.

"I didn't think you'd actually want to get the phone today—" Felix glances at me with a sigh.

"I mentioned I would get you a new one, so why not today?" he responds, while my gaze frequently drifts to the back of his head, where his blend of blonde and black hair stirs feelings I know I shouldn't entertain.

"What's on your mind, Chloé?" Felix asks, wrapping his left arm around my side and pulling me closer. I don't resist, recognizing it's a struggle I can't win.

I bite my lip, then reply, "I was just thinking about your new look; your hair has grown out a bit... it looks cute." He rolls his eyes playfully, countering, "I'm not cute..."

I stifle a laugh, momentarily forgetting my annoyance with him. "Whatever you say."

As we venture deeper into the mall, I notice some passersby glancing our way, though I can't discern if their expressions are filled with admiration or disdain. Regardless, I'm not in the mood for attention.

"How's your hand?" I inquire, glancing at his formerly injured hand, now completely healed without a trace of a scar.

"It's fine; it started healing right away after the screen cut through. Perks of being a supernatural being," he winks at me. Finally, we arrive at the Apple Store, which is busier than usual today—though it is Saturday, so that's to be expected.

Upon entering the store, the atmosphere buzzes with excitement and chatter. Bright displays of the latest phones capture my attention, yet my thoughts remain focused on Felix.

The store is more crowded than I anticipated, filled with eager customers exploring the latest technology, their voices blending into a lively backdrop.

Felix leads the way, ensuring our hands are intertwined. His confidence shines as he deftly navigates through the crowd, and I can't help but admire how effortlessly he commands attention, drawing glances from those around us—a stark contrast to my more reserved demeanor.

"Are you sure you want to do this today?" I ask, attempting to conceal my uncertainty with a playful tone. "It's really not a big deal. I can wait."

He turns to me, his expression softening. "No, really. I want to make it up to you. Plus, it's about time you upgraded your phone." His sincerity sends a flutter through my heart, warming me from within.

As we approach the counter, a friendly employee greets us, ready to assist. Felix dives into a conversation, casually explaining what happened to my phone, treating it as if it were a minor inconvenience.

While Felix discusses options, I take a moment to observe him—the way he interacts, his gestures, and the spark in his eyes when he speaks—it's captivating. I find myself lost in thought, pondering how someone so seemingly carefree can also be so considerate.

After a few minutes of deliberation, Felix selects a model and quickly completes the purchase. "See? All fixed!" he declares, a triumphant grin lighting up his face.

I glance at my new phone and then back at him. "Thank you, Felix. Seriously."

He shrugs, a playful smirk gracing his lips. "Just doing what's right."

As we step away from the counter, the weight of my old phone's demise feels considerably lighter. The new device, sleek and shiny, fits comfortably in my hand.

"How about we grab a bite to eat?" he suggests, tilting his head slightly.

I arch an eyebrow, "A bite of what, precisely?" With his hand resting gently on my lower back, he leads me out of the store.

"Well, we both know that your options are more limited than mine, so I'll let your imagination fill in the blanks," he replies with a playful grin. I roll my eyes as he walks alongside me.

As we make our way to the food court, the crowd begins to thin, giving me the opportunity to steal a few glances at him. It's all too easy to be captivated by his charm and lose sight of everything else.

Eventually, we find a small table, and Felix starts a conversation that I struggle to follow. I nod along, but my thoughts drift back to how he had pulled me closer in the store and the warmth that radiated from his touch.

"Chloé?" Felix calls out, breaking my reverie. "Are you okay? You seem a bit distracted."

"Yeah, just reflecting on... well, everything," I respond, hoping my flushed cheeks won't betray the true nature of my thoughts. "You're just really... different."

"Different is one way to describe it," he replies with a grin, and I can't help but return his smile.

"But I prefer to think of myself as unique," he continues, leaning in slightly as if sharing a secret. "I mean, who else can break a phone with their bare hands and still charm their way into your heart?"

I laugh, shaking my head. "You do have a point. That's quite the talent."

Felix takes a sip of his drink, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "So, what's next on your wish list? Aside from a phone that doesn't shatter into a million pieces, of course."

"Well, there's a fair coming up soon. I didn't go last year... I usually went with Eva, but—" I trail off, reminded that my best friend is no longer here with me.

Who would accompany me now?

He raises an eyebrow and offers, "I'd be happy to go with you, if you'd like."

As Felix's offer hangs in the air, a mixture of surprise and warmth washes over me. It's not just the idea of going to the fair; it's the prospect of sharing that experience with him. There's something about his confidence and easy charm that draws me in, making me feel seen in a way I hadn't expected.

"What would you want to do at the fair?" I ask, trying to gauge his enthusiasm.

He leans back in his chair, a playful smirk dancing on his lips. "Oh, I'm all for the rides! The more thrilling, the better. I want to feel that rush of adrenaline."

I laugh, picturing him on a roller coaster, his carefree spirit perfectly suited for the wild twists and turns. "You really think you can handle it?"

"Please," he replies, feigning offense. "I'm made of tougher stuff than that. Besides, it's all about the company, right?"

His words strike a chord within me. The thought of sharing laughter and excitement with him feels exhilarating. "Okay, I'm in. Just promise not to scream like a little kid," I tease.

Felix chuckles, shaking his head. "I'll have to keep my cool, then. But you might want to brace yourself for my competitive side when it comes to the games."

"Competitive, huh? I'll take you on any day," I challenge.
