*Flashback September 21st 2024*
Romain sat on the edge of his bed, his mind still spinning from the harsh, unexpected turn the evening had taken.
His hands shook, the engagement ring he had spent months picking out lying abandoned on the nightstand, a bitter reminder of everything that had gone wrong.
Twelve years. Twelve years he had spent with Him, thinking they were building a life together, only to be blindsided and get all of it slammed in his face.
"You know I don't want to get married, Romain. I never did," The Brit had said, his voice steady as if he hadn't just ripped Romain's heart apart.
Romain's hands clenched into fists, the hurt immediately turning to anger.
He had thought he knew Jenson. How could Jenson keep something this big hidden from him?
They had shared everything, every dream, every struggle, every triumph except, apparently, the one thing that mattered most to Romain.
Romain didn't grow up believing in god but Romain did extremely believe in marriage, the Swiss saw it as something to work towards in a relationship.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Romain had shouted in disbelief.
"I thought- I thought we wanted the same things." The Swiss shouted madly
"I love you, Romain," Jenson had said, his calm infuriating Romain even more.
"But marriage just isn't something I want." The Brit tried to explain.
For Romain it was just... Atleast 10 years too late.
Romain had stormed out, anger burning a hole in his chest.
It wasn't just the rejection; it was the feeling that Jenson had wasted his time, wasted twelve years of his life, letting Romain believe they were heading towards something that now felt like an impossible dream.
With nowhere else to go, he found himself driving to Jev and André's place.
Jev had been his best friend for as long as he could remember, and if anyone could help him make sense of this mess, it was Jev.
Romain knew he left his boys alone but he needed to get away from him as far as possible
When Jev opened the door, it took one look at Romain's face for his easy smile to fade.
Jev knew what the face Romain pulled was, it was confusion, anger, disgust and just helpless.
"What happened?" The younger immedeatly asked, pulling his "brother" inside, his brow furrowed with concern.
"Where's Jenson?" The French continued asking confused but mostly worried.
Romain collapsed onto the couch, burying his face in his hands. Softly sobbing into his hands.
Romain felt the couch dip and two arms pull him into a chest. Romain held onto the younger while he cried, Jev being the rock he needed. Jev was softly shushing him trying to get him to calm down.
He heard the soft murmur of Jev explaining things to André in the background, after he calmed a bit and moments later, André joined them, sitting quietly beside Romain as Jev let him go and stood up hovering nearby, pacing impatiently.
Romain knew his friend was unable to sit still and this helped the younger to concentrate so he didn't comment on it.
"I proposed," Romain said after a moment, his voice hoarse from the crying.
