When I arrived at the airport, I saw Oliver, my dad, and Mannie waiting for me. Oliver, with that wide smile, ran towards me and wrapped me in a tight embrace. I felt his arms around me, and for a moment, I realized how much he had grown in those seven months.
—"You really came back, didn't you?" he whispered, not wanting to let me go.
—"I'm back, Ollie," I said, feeling an emotion that escaped me.— "And now I'm here to stay."
My dad hugged me right after, in a shy way, but I felt his emotion in the silence. We exchanged a look that said everything without needing words. I knew that, somewhere inside him, he understood why I had needed this time.
Mannie enveloped me in her wide, sweet, and loving embrace.
—"I missed you so much, my little girl," she said.—"I missed you too, Mannie."
On the way home, I felt that the streets, the people, everything was familiar but at the same time different. It was as if I were seeing everything with new eyes. It wasn't the city that had changed—it was me. The house, with its familiar smells and Oliver's peculiar mess, felt like a safe harbor. Finally, after so many months, I truly felt at home.
