Betrayed by his colleagues, Kade gets trapped in another world where he must put his scientific mind to use and adapt. One day he is forced to work for the king's Royal Inventor, and now he must help innovate the kingdom and foster peace with the ne...
Something flew by, and he watched in fascination as a small, birdlike creature with insect wings landed on a tree with purple leaves. The wings folded like a beetle's would, under a layer of feathery hair. It had dull brown colors with a white belly, four beady eyes and a short black beak.
Where Kade sat, the grass was burnt in an outward explosion. He searched for signs of the portal or any other debris that may have come with him but found nothing.
Did it work? Did the portal actually take him to another dimension?
The facility had spent over a decade researching interdimensional travel but had never once had a successful run. Usually, the lasers would disintegrate or reject whatever they tossed through the doorway.
There was also the risk of being sent to a dimension where the laws of physics were different from what humans had evolved with, and reduce the test subjects to a pile of mush. To prevent this scenario, they'd incorporated things like the Golden Ratio into their equations to ensure the doorway would open to a world with similar physics.
Kade patted himself off and began to wander through the field. More of those strange bug birds flew by, and a handful of swirling clouds passed overhead, casting a shadow. The scenery gave him a sense of surrealness, and he had to pinch himself to make sure this was happening.
Then he saw it.
At first, he heaved a sigh of relief when he noticed the other person. He had feared being transported to a world all by himself and going mad from loneliness.
He couldn't tell if it was a man or woman but noticed the loose white cloth draped around their body with a sash and belt at the waist. There were slits near their hips and a thick blue collar around their shoulder and chest.
As for the person, it wasn't until they got closer that Kade noticed some discrepancies with his idea of 'human'.
First, they had very light skin, and long pointed ears that reached the back of their head. Their hair was a coppery brown and floated around their shoulders. They were taller than Kade but had a build that was neither lithe nor bulky. He couldn't tell by their face or form what gender they were supposed to be, and the most interesting trait of all were the swirls on their skin. They reminded Kade of symmetrical human Mosaicism.
Another one of these people appeared behind the first one, with slightly darker skin and markings, but equally ethereal hair and an ambiguous face.
Were they dangerous? Only one way to find out.
Kade waved them down, then slowly approached the pair. The smaller person had their abdomen exposed, showing that those swirls extended to their back but not their belly.
"Hello! Don't be afraid." He received odd looks from the pair as their elflike ears twitched in his direction. "I'm uh...Lost?"
The two exchanged words in a rough language. Then the taller one approached him, holding out a hand. They tilted their head, and Kade assumed they were offering a handshake.
He reached up to oblige, only for them to ignore it altogether and start playing with his hair. The person's eyes widened, and they excitedly spoke to their friend who did likewise.
Kade just stood there, feeling embarrassed as he was petted like a class rabbit. Then they grabbed his arm and pulled back his sleeve, searching for something. It wasn't until the taller one compared their arms that he realized they were wondering why he lacked any sort of marks.
Things got odd when they started stroking his arm. Their palms felt particularly rough, and he gently pushed them away.
"Can you help me?" He asked, knowing they wouldn't understand. He tried making hand gestures and pointing to the burn mark in the grass behind him. The two stepped away to have a conversation among themselves.
Kade waited patiently, and when they returned, they gestured for the man to follow.
With no other choice, he did just that.

A/N: This story is gonna be weird. Also don't expect me to explain the science stuff. Fun fact: I'm not a physicist. I just used a lot of cool science words and hoped for the best.
