Warning for mild spice!
Kade stood there, chewing rapidly so he could explain himself.
King Nyx joined him by the buffet. "It seems I owe you an apology. Despite being king, I... didn't realize you were one of ours."
Kade noticed how everyone's attitude toward him had shifted from disgust to curiosity.
What was the harm in admitting he was human? Toca had understood, so maybe Nyx would too?
"I'm not." He clarified.
"Pardon?"
"I'm not a carnivore. I'm an...Omnivore." Omnivores would be easier to explain than humans.
"Omnivore?" Nyx's eyes dilated. "Like a Twilup?"
"I don't know what that is."
"It's an animal that eats both meat and plants."
"Ah! Yes. That. I'm like that."
Confused carnivores were whispering as Nyx tilted his head. "Interesting. Where are you from?"
Worried about where this line of questioning might go, Kade decided to stick with his usual story. "I'm from the Terran Kingdom. But my family was isolated, so I didn't realize how different I was until I entered the capital."
"And your family. Were they also Omnivores?"
"That's right. But they're gone now. I left home when they passed, and I haven't met anyone like me since."
"So you're like an entirely different breed..." Nyx looked on with renewed interest.
"Are you able to eat any kind of meat?" One of the women who hung around Nyx spoke up. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her.
"I don't know..." Kade shrugged. "This is my first time getting to try it. Most vegetables make me sick so I have to be careful when eating those."
"You might be a halfbreed. Or at least more carnivore than vegetarian." She suggested.
"How did you change your face color earlier?" Another woman asked.
"I can't control that."
"How does your hair stay down without ties?"
"It just does."
"Why are your ears so short?"
"They're-"
"Do you not have any markings at all?"
"No-"
"What kind of accent is that?"
The carnivores started crowding in, eager to learn more about the strange human. The change caught Kade off guard, and before he knew it, King Nyx had grabbed him by the wrist and led him from the party.
Kade willingly followed along, glad to be out of the limelight, until they stopped at Nyx's bedchamber. Kade took one look at the bed and backed away.
"Relax." Nyx closed the door before he could escape. "Now that you've incurred my people's curiosity, they'll swarm you. This is the safest place for you to be right now."
"Why did they start acting so different? Everyone hated me when I got here."
"They didn't hate you per se. They're just tired of the stigma that Toca's people have against us. Whenever we get an envoy, they always act like we're disgusting monsters. They'd refuse to attend parties, eat our food, or even go to the city."
