"The door...portal... was stuck open?" Aino asked in disbelief. "But we didn't see anything."
"The most noticeable effects on this side were the weather anomalies. We were on the verge of quantum entanglement. This would have caused irreversible wave function collapse on both ends. That's why Terra was experiencing Earth weather and nothing was noticed on the other side. The worst weather Terrans ever experienced was heavy fog." Kade explained. "And fog isn't all that uncommon on earth. So we thought it was normal."
"What would have happened if this facility never closed the door?"
"Our worlds would have collided. Plant life was already seeping into this world, but then your sky would have changed, the weather would have worsened, and then...Total dimensional collapse."
Aino tightened his grip on Kade's waist. The two of them were lying face to face in a feather-down bed, in the inventor's room provided by King Nyx. After Kade told everyone exactly what happened to him on Earth, they were released for the night with only five hours left until sunrise.
Aino refused to let Kade leave his side, ushering him into his room. The two embraced before flopping down on the bed to lie next to each other and talk.
The Terran had recovered from the season's effects, so sex wasn't on his mind for once. Kade was exhausted after trekking from the jungle, dodging human soldiers, and getting captured by the carnivores. Being chained up in the back of a box wasn't very comfortable either, so he appreciated the luxury of a carnivore-made bed.
Aino sighed, then buried his face in Kade's hair for the umpteenth time, drawing him close like a body pillow.
"What do you think we should do about the remaining humans?" Aino started playing with Kade's hair. "I've tried replicating their guns. But I've had to develop a dangerous compound that combusts to launch the bullets at the needed velocity. This invention of mine doesn't sit well with me." His hand stopped moving. "There are so many deadly ways it could be used."
"Gunpowder." Kade frowned. "You invented gunpowder."
"Quotes fitting name..."
He reached up and cupped Aino's troubled face. "You don't want to use it, do you?"
He shook his head. And Kade fell in love with him all over again. Aino had a prickly exterior but was gentle at heart. He loathed killing, even more so if it was done using one of his inventions. Yet Aino did what he thought was needed when his world was in danger. And his brilliant mind found a substitute for this world's equivalent of charcoal and sulfur. He was a remarkable individual.
Tears pricked at the corner of Kade's eyes. His vision grew blurry, and when Aino noticed, he grabbed his hands. "What's wrong?"
A deep sadness swelled abruptly from within, and Kade could only lay there as his tears spilled over. His body trembled under the weight of his actions.
"Kade!" Aino started rubbing his back. "Tell me what's wrong? Please!"
"I killed people..."
"You did what?"
"The program...I modified it. The meltdown I caused was designed to destroy the whole facility. Everyone working there that morning would have been..." He sobbed. "My family was off-grounds, but I couldn't risk anyone following them. So I programmed the portal to explode. Otherwise, the scientists who worked on the project with me could have tried to rebuild it later."
He lay a sobbing mess in Aino's arms as the Terran stared in shock. By now he knew humans were capable of terrible things, so why was he so surprised that his beloved Kade was the same?
