Chapter two

My existence is a scandal

By Oscar Wilde

Arriving at Toccoa after sitting on a train for 17 hours was both a relief and at the same time the start of an entirely new wave of anxiety.

"Dam my ass hurts" she muttered to herself.

Stepping off the train she was suddenly met with at least a hundred people stalking around in confusion. She was just about to become one of them when she heard a voice call out.

"Easy Company! Easy Company!"

"Well, that was certainly easier than expected"; she chuckled at her own witt.

Looking down at the paper filled to the brim with information to dubble check that she in fact was in the right lane; before making her way down to the gentleman caller.

"Excuse me, sir, I'm in easy company. However, I don't quite know what to do with that information, could you eh well help me make sense of it? Where should I go? Where do I get my uniform? And well where do I sleep...sir" She did of course not voice the number of curses floating around her head including but not limited to; Fuck, shit, I'm a dumbass, I might die, etc.

"Well, soldier," he replied, his tone matter-of-fact, "the first thing you want to do is get your gear. You'll find that over there." He pointed toward a building in the distance. Turning she followed his line of sight.

Kiran nodded," Alright sir."

He continued, "From there, you'll meet a corporal who'll point you in the direction of your sleeping quarters. If you're lucky you might find someone else from your company there, maybe even someone from your own platoon". He smiled at her, she grinned back.

Making her way towards the second table of the day, she was once again greeted by a man, though this one seemed different. His demeanor was sharp, and he seemed eager for confirmation that she was actually in Easy Company.

"Hand over the paper soldier" He was an angry-looking man with brown hair and piercing eyes, his posture rigid.

"Yes sir".

"That is not the way to great a lieutenant, soldier. You're supposed to say, 'Sir, yes, sir.'"

"Sir sorry sir" she handed over the requested paper; feeling a slight irritation coursing through her body.

The lieutenant took the paper and began to sift through it, his eyes flicking up to assess her every few seconds. Kiran noticed a furrow forming on his brow, but she kept quiet, unwilling to comment.

" Are you really from New York City, soldier"

"Sir no Sir I'm from just outside of New York City.... sir"

He sneered at her, she had no idea why, but he did. "You don't look like much, private. If you wanna stay in my company, you better grow a couple of inches. Now get," he snapped, dismissing her without another glance.

Kiran could not tell if he was joking, or if he was just a dumbass, nevertheless, she grabbed the gear she was assigned and made her way out of there as quickly as possible.

"Well, isn't this just swell," Kiran muttered to herself, looking around the chaos of the training grounds with no idea where to go. She didn't have to wonder long when a voice cut through the noise.

"Hey, you!"

Turning around as quickly as she did with the proper coordination of a lady used to heels sent her things to the floor, her boots might just have been a smidge too big....
